What Did Ryan Reynolds Say?
The idea of Deadpool moving toward being a supporting character in the MCU comes from Reynolds himself as he opens up about what he thinks the future of his character will look like. During an Actors on Actors interview for Variety, he said, “Deadpool’s a supporting character much more than he is a main [character]. You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again. So, I think if he comes back, it’s going to be in someone else’s movie. Changing Tatum [was] so excited to play Gambit, and I would happily be the fifth banana in his movie, or anyone else’s.”
The fact that Reynolds believes the popular antihero is destined to now be a supporting character is an interesting decision after he’s been the lead in his own trilogy of movies. However, it could be him giving a hint that audiences shouldn’t expect any more Deadpool movies and that his character will just be popping up elsewhere in supporting roles from now on, which is certainly something that could work out in Marvel’s favor. He’s got tons of personality; therefore, whatever Marvel decides to do next with him will be popular in the eyes of fans.
Deadpool Would Be A Perfect Supporting Role
So far, all of Deadpool’s movies have featured an ensemble task as he has ended up in different teams with other superheroes. Even though he’s been the lead role in the previous three films, they have given a glimpse of how he can interact with others and provide great connections to drive the story forward. That’s why he would make a fantastic supporting role in other Marvel films, whether alongside the Avengers, which the character has aspired to do, as was pushed in Deadpool & Wolverine, or a different group.
Deadpool’s quick comments and extreme violence aren’t always going to be easy for Marvel to make work. However, if he’s not the lead character, his fight scenes can blend in with the same style as everyone else’s. He would be able to interact with others in funny ways, too, which would create compelling scenes as he could poke characters with comments that others cannot get away with because of the way that Deadpool tends to be written.
Reynolds has also pointed out that it’s going to be tough to create another underdog story for Deadpool, and he doesn’t think that can happen again. That is another reason he’s perfect for a supporting role. The focus doesn’t need to be on a life-or-death scenario for the Merc with a Mouth. He can just complement what is happening with Marvel by focusing on his positives rather than the potential drawbacks of the character.
Why He Can’t Be A Lead Character
Deadpool worked well as a lead character in his own movies prior to being in the MCU, and he shared that responsibility with Wolverine for his first film in the MCU. However, outside of that, it will take a lot of work for him to be a lead character, given the tone that Marvel Studios has set for all of its movies so far. Deadpool is a controversial character that appeals more to adult audiences, and that’s not the case for all the other Marvel movies, which makes him stand out.
Throwing in his fourth-wall-breaking moments for a quick scene in the broader movie makes sense and would bring a moment of levity to those stories. However, now that Deadpool is firmly part of the MCU and the overall story, it would feel strange to see him as a lead character acting the way Deadpool does best while trying to tell a story that fits into everything else. It worked for a one-off with Wolverine, but that was largely due to the multiverse and the ability for him to move into different timelines that weren’t directly in the world that Marvel Studios operates in.
Audiences absolutely want to see Deadpool again because he’s so popular and unique within the MCU. However, Reynolds is right that he’s best served as a supporting character because his underdog personality isn’t going to be easy to convey again in another movie. It’s getting to the point where Marvel would have to raise the stakes to a crazy level to make that a believable scenario.
