Widely regarded as one of Rockstar Games’ best releases, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the adventures of outlaw Arthur Morgan across the fictional US states of Ambarino, Lemoyne, New Austin, New Hanover, and West Elizabeth in 1899. The title offers all sorts of activities for players to engage in, ranging from simple tasks like fishing and hunting to criminal endeavors like robbing banks and stagecoaches. A recent Reddit post from user Bagged__bolts that has received more than 7,600 upvotes called attention to a stagecoach robbery mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 that features a 1779 painting of George Washington by Charles Wilson Peale. The work, Washington at Princeton, depicts the first American president leaning on a cannon following the Continental Army’s victory at the Battle of Princeton during the American Revolutionary War. British auction house Christie’s sold the portrait, which is currently housed in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, for around $21.3 million in 2006, according to a report by NBC News.

The heist highlighted by Bagged__bolts is among the six special stagecoach robberies that are available in Red Dead Redemption 2. This particular mission and two others can be accessed by talking to train station clerk Alden Carruthers, while the rest of the robberies are tipped off by Hector Barlow. Community members joked that Arthur, considered by many to be one of Rockstar Games’ best protagonists, was seemingly scammed in the heist that involved the George Washington painting, as turning in the loot to Seamus would only net a reward of $40 despite the portrait being worth approximately $674,900 in 1899.

Aside from Washington at Princeton, Rockstar Games’ highly rated title features the works of other well-known artists, including pieces by American landscape illustrator Thomas Cole, French Rococo style follower Francois Boucher, and Italian Realism painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. While a 2020 study conducted by researchers at Abertay University in Scotland concluded that Red Dead Redemption 2 was not historically accurate, critics have praised the game’s attention to detail and immersive world.
