Summary
- Mythical Island expansion is shaking up the staling meta in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket.
- Mew ex has Genome Hacking to counter powerful cards like Mewtwo ex and Charizard ex easily.
- Aerodactyl ex’s Primeval Law ability can disrupt an opponent’s evolutions, while Tauros is a perfect revenge killer.
Just six weeks into the game, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket’s meta has started to feel extremely stale. The vast majority of opposition decks are comprised of Starmie ex and Articuno ex, Mewtwo ex and Gardevoir, Charizard ex or Pikachu ex. It’s become such a problem, in fact, that players are creating their own custom lobbies in an attempt to avoid these dominant archetypes.

Yesterday, The Pokemon Company revealed the game’s latest expansion, Mythical Island, and players are already pumped that a few of the cards shown have the potential to shake the game up.
Three of Mythical Island’s Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket cards have drawn major attention over on the game’s subreddit, with threads on each generating almost 5,000 combined upvotes and 1,000 combined comments.
The first card to be picked up on was one of the expansion’s featured Pokemon, Mew ex. With its Genome Hacking move, Mew ex has the power to overcome both Mewtwo ex and Charizard ex easily.
Genome Hacking allows Mew ex to use any of the opponent’s active Pokemon’s moves, with a cost of just three energies. Both Mewtwo and Charizard have extremely powerful attacks, dealing 150 damage and 200 damage, respectively, but at a cost of four energies. If they come up against Mew ex, it will likely be able to use the opposition’s moves faster than them, putting it in a prime position.

Following Mew ex, players have already fallen in love with Aerodactyl ex. Aerodactyl ex is another card that has the potential to upset the meta with its Primeval Law ability.
This ability stops the opponent from evolving their active Pokemon, meaning all setup will need to be done from the bench. If a Starmie deck user starts the match with a Staryu in its active spot, for example, it will need to retreat the Pokemon to evolve it, which slows down their momentum.

Tauros was another card that got a lot of love, but it proved a little more divisive. For three energy, it can use the Fighting Tackle move, which deals an extra 80 damage, for 120 total, to any Pokemon ex. It’s not likely to be a match-winner on its own, but being a basic Pokemon, it could be one to have on the bench ready for revenge kills.
Now, while there are many anti-meta cards in the new expansion, it should be noted that the Vaporeon card is seemingly going to empower Starmie ex decks. Its ability to move energy around freely, coupled with Misty’s broken potential, has the chance to make a strong deck even stronger, but with Mew ex, Aerodactyl ex, and Tauros, things might just be alright.
