Pixar's Inside Out 3 Should Explore Self-Esteem

Summary

  • Inside Out 3 could focus on self-esteem & self-worth, exploring Riley’s inner work.
  • The movie could show Riley becoming conceited, then insecure, learning to be humble and confident.
  • Fans enjoy spinoff TV series Dream Productions, anticipating where Riley’s story goes next.

Inside Out 3 hasn’t been confirmed, but chances are that everyone who watched the first two Pixar movies would be more than happy to see Riley again. Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann has talked about Inside Out 3 and thinks there could definitely be more to Riley’s journey. After watching these smart, funny, and thought-provoking films, it’s hard not to want to rush to the theater to see a third right away.

Inside Out and Inside Out 2 focused on how emotions worked in Riley’s head, and Inside Out 3 should focus on one feeling. What if Inside Out 3 was about self-esteem and self-worth? It would be cool and interesting to explore this idea, especially since there is so much inner work that Riley could do.

How Inside Out 3 Can Feature A Storyline About Self-Esteem

As everyone knows, too much or too little self-esteem can be a problem. It’s a shame when someone’s ego gets too large and they become insufferable to everyone around them. It’s also problematic when someone feels so terribly about themselves that they never speak up or follow their dreams. Inside Out 3 could focus on Riley trying to become more confident and learning an important and relatable lesson in the process.

Whether Inside Out 3 is about Riley as a parent or an older teenager or college student, the movie could follow her inner work on her self-esteem. For the first part of the movie, she could become too conceited, which would allow the emotions in her brain to go wild. Her friends and family members would be upset with her behavior, which would make her realize she was behaving poorly. The second part of the movie could focus on how insecure she feels. After she realizes that she was miserable both ways, she learns to be more humble and grounded. There could be a sweet and funny scene at the end of the movie of all the emotions cheering Riley on.

It would also be fun to see Riley struggle with her self-esteem because Amy Poehler’s Inside Out character Joycould get involved. Since Joy just wants Riley to have a good time and embrace all that life has to offer, Joy would have a difficult time. This would add some layers to the story. Voiced by Kaitlyn Diaz in the first movie and Kensington Tallman in the second, Riley is one of the best Pixar characters because she’s compassionate, relatable, and curious about the world.

There are many ways that Inside Out 3 could explore Riley’s self-worth. Riley could have a big presentation at work that could lead to a promotion, or she could lose a friend who hasn’t been nice to her. These storylines would all make Riley take a careful look at who she is, who she wants to be, and what the future looks like. While Inside Out has hilarious lines, the Pixar franchise focuses on serious topics like moving to a new place and feeling anxiety in high school. It would make sense for Riley to go on this type of journey in Inside Out 3, and by the end of the movie, she would definitely be in a better, happier, calmer place.

Riley’s Story Continues In An Inside Out Spinoff TV SeriesRiley in Inside Out

While there have been some great Pixar sequels, it’s also fun to see the Inside Out spinoff TV show called Dream Productions. Thankfully for fans, this show also features Riley. In the show, which only has four episodes, Paula Persimmon (Paula Pell) is dealing with all of Riley’s feelings. In an interview with IndieWire, creator and director Mike Jones said:

“I think my goal always was bringing the crew along to that final episode, to that lucid dream, where we can do something that ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Inside Out 2’ haven’t done. We can literally bring Riley into the mind world and have all of these mind workers stunned at the fact that they are finally able to speak to this girl one-on-one. It’s kind of breathtaking.”

Whether fans are getting to know the new emotions in Inside Out 2 or watching the TV series Dream Productions, Riley’s story has struck a chord with audiences. If there is an Inside Out 3, it will be fascinating to see where her life goes next.
