Dexter: Original Sin‘s promotional campaign in the lead up to the prequel series’ premiere on December 13, 2024, was impressive to say the least. The team pulled out all the stops to push the release of Dexter Morgan’s origin story. One of the best things they did was to launch a 90s-style retro Dexter game, and it’s an instantly addictive fun ride.

Alongside the Dexter: Original Sin game, the promotional push saw the Hollywood sign covered in the serial killer’s famous shrink wrap used for his kill rooms, as well as other impressive takeovers in cities across the globe. However, it’s the game that has helped to get fans in the mood for the vibe of the prequel series, acting as a time warp back to the iconic 90s Miami location where Dexter first discovered his urge to kill.

The Dexter Original Sin Retro Game Is A Great Way To Get Fans Excited About The Prequel Series

Fans still love retro games as they are a reminder of times gone by and fond memories of playing against friends and battling it out for the highest score. The 90s were a great decade for games, and while they pale in comparison to today’s impressive graphics, they are something to be treasured forever for their uniquely simplistic qualities. In the lead up to Dexter: Original Sin‘s release, Paramount launched a 90s style retro game to accompany the prequel series, and it is a joyous reminder of what games were like back in the time period the new series takes place in. YouTuber, j4kefradz made a video about his experiences playing the game (see above) and fans can get a feel of what to expect from it.

The game is an 8 bit arcade-style side scroller, and it can be played on a PC or a mobile device, and it can be accessed by clicking HERE. It sees the player take on the role of a young Dexter Morgan (wearing a black apron and sporting surprisingly bright blonde hair), as he battles the bad guys of Miami with his sharp knifes. As the game starts, it comes up with the following message on screen from Harry Morgan:

Remember To Follow The Code, Dexter! Never Kill An Innocent. Be absolutely certain that the target is a killer.

The aim of the game is to collect as many knifes as possible to throw at bad guys, and each time Dexter kills one, a blood slide is made available for the player to collect, which is worth 100 points. It’s important to avoid slinging knives at innocent people, as that would obviously break Harry’s code.

For anyone old enough to remember what games were like back in 1991, the Dexter: Original Sin arcade style side scroller will be a nice reminder of that time period. As for Gen Z Dexter fans, it’s a unique insight into what games used to look like. It’s so cool that a Dexter game has been created with the sole purpose of looking like a retro game from the 90s, and it sets up the vibe for the new prequel series really well. This is the type of game Dexter Morgan would have been playing during his formative years, and that helps to give audiences a feel for the time period when the events take place.

The 90s was a completely different time, when nobody had smartphones or high end games consoles. It was games like Space Invaders that people would play in huge arcades and early games consoles like the Atari. It gives an insight into the basic levels of technology available to young Dexter as he embarks on his own killing spree. Computers in the 1990s didn’t have the same capabilities as the ones people use today, so it’ll be interesting to see how Dexter uses the basics to hunt down his prey. As witnessed in Dexter: Original Sin episode 1, young Dexter isn’t the polished killer he was in the original series. He looks set to make many mistakes as he develops his dark passenger, similarly to Dexter in the new retro game.
