  • Producer Yusuke Tomizawa has announced that more remasters are in the works.
  • Tales of Graces F Remastered will be released in January 2025.

The Tales of series is gearing up to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025, and during a recent livestream, producer Yusuke Tomizawa announced that more remasters are on the way. The initiative, dubbed the Remastered Project, aims to bring additional classic Tales of games to modern consoles. The franchise is no stranger to remasters, with Tales of Symphonia alone receiving two remasters alongside ports to additional platforms.

The Tales of series is one of the longest-running JRPG franchises in the gaming industry. It began in 1995 with the release of Tales of Phantasia, a JRPG for the SNES. Since then, the series has seen over 15 mainline titles, not to mention numerous spin-offs and mobile games. Tales of Arise set new records on Steam and sold over three million units, potentially becoming the best-selling mainline entry in the franchise, a title previously held by Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia.

As a staple of the JRPG scene, the “Tales of” franchise has produced plenty of great games, but which entries rank the highest overall?

With this newfound prominence in the gaming industry, it’s no surprise that Bandai Namco is doubling down on its investment in the franchise, even if that means bringing older classics to modern platforms. Producer Tomizawa confirmed that more Tales of remasters are coming, starting with Tales of Graces F Remastered, set to launch in January 2025. He also expressed a commitment to releasing remasters fairly consistently, supported by a dedicated development line focused on this initiative.

Tales of Producer Confirms a Development Line For More Remasters

In the English version of the livestream, the Tales of producers acknowledged the longer gaps between new mainline releases, which used to launch every one to two years. The latest mainline release was Tales of Arise in 2021, and while the game received the Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn DLC in 2023, fans were frustrated by the wait. The developers attributed this delay to the technical advancements in gaming hardware and ever-rising development costs. This challenge prompted the creation of two dedicated development lines: one for new titles and another for remastering classic Tales of games.

Though the Remastered Project only kicked off recently, Bandai Namco has a long history of remastering and remaking entries in the popular franchise. Tales of Phantasia received remasters for the PS1 and GBA, along with a fully-voiced remake for the PSP. Initially released for the Nintendo DS, Tales of Hearts was remade for the PS Vita, transitioning from a 2D perspective with dual screens to a 3D view with a single-screen interface. The fan-favorite JRPG Tales of Symphonia launched on the GameCube, received a PS2 port with extra content, followed by a remastered duology on PS3, a Windows port, and, most recently, another remaster in 2023 for modern consoles. Bandai Namco seems keen on keeping the Tales of series alive with new or revamped entries going forward.
