Summary
- Idris Elba wants to reprise his role as Solomon Reed in a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie.
- Elba has begun trying to speak the project into existence, hoping that Keanu Reeves will be a part of it too.
- CDPR has already confirmed there will be a live-action Cyberpunk project but hasn’t provided additional details.
Work on Cyberpunk 2077 is presumably wrapped up now, although the reveal of a surprise 2.2 update last week begs to differ, what with The Witcher 4 getting its first proper showing at The Game Awards. Night City won’t be left behind for good though and Idris Elba, who joined the game as Solomon Reed in its Phantom Liberty expansion, is pushing for the CD Projekt Red game to get a movie adaptation.
Even though the focus of Elba’s interview with Screen Rant was about his return to the big screen as Knuckles in Sonic 3 which hits cinemas this week, the actor spoke excitedly about his work as Reed in Cyberpunk. When asked if he thinks the game would lend itself well to a live-action adaptation, Elba replied, “I think if any film could do a live-action rendition, it could be [Cyberpunk 2077], and I think [Keanu Reeves] character and my character together would be, ‘Whoa’. So, let’s speak that into existence.”

Elba and Reeves have quickly become as sought-after as Jack Black when it comes to video game acting roles. Both were in Cyberpunk, they’re Knuckles and Shadow in Sonic 3, and Reeves recently played the lead role in the Armored Core episode of Secret Level. As for whether they will be a part of a Cyberpunk movie, if there ever is one, while on the one hand it would make a lot of sense, there are reasons why it could happen without them.
Idris Elba Wants A Cyberpunk 2077 Movie
The Book Of Solomon Might Not Be Closed
For starters, CDPR has already confirmed there’s going to be a live-action Cyberpunk project. Details about it are few and far between though and it’s still unclear whether it will be a show or a movie. Elba appeared to not know about that when he was asked about a potential movie which presumably means he hasn’t been asked to reprise the role of Reed in the announced project, at least not yet.
Very minor spoilers for Phantom Liberty, but Reed and Johnny Silverhand’s – Reeves’ character – stories are effectively wrapped up by the end of the game. A live-action movie could be a retelling of their stories rather than something that takes place after the events of the game, though. The animated show Edgerunners was a huge success, so it seems inevitable we will get more Cyberpunk adaptations whether Elba and Reeves are a part of them or not.
Phantom Liberty is the first and only major story expansion DLC for Cyberpunk 2077. Return to the game as V as she attempts to protect the NUS president, and meet Solomon Reed, voiced and portrayed by Hollywood star Idris Elba.
