- Fans are excited for the potential new DCU Green Lantern portrayal under James Gunn.
Green Lantern actor Kyle Chandler recently snapped a photo with a fan that may reveal his look as the DCU’s Hal Jordan, and it resembles a specific version of the iconic DC character.
A Green Lantern HBO series titled Lanterns was one of the first projects announced when DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn unveiled his initial slate for the new DCU (DCU) franchise. Gunn described Lanterns as an Earth-based TV mystery show in the vein of HBO’s True Detective, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart discovering a “terrifying mystery” that ties into the DCU’s overarching story. Over a year later, Aaron Pierre was cast as John Stewart, and Kyle Chandler was tapped to play Hal Jordan. With filming expected to begin soon, Chandler is sporting a new look that likely reveals his appearance as Hal Jordan in the DCU.

A new DCU actor has one past DC movie on their to-watch list, but most fans probably would recommend something other than this notoriously bad film.
A photo of Chandler with a fan has circulated on the internet, with Chandler sporting a full beard and medium-length hair. As fans noted, Chandler’s appearance is reminiscent of Hal Jordan’s look in the Green Lantern: Earth One graphic novel series written by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko. With Lanterns expected to begin production in January 2025, this is likely Chandler’s look as Hal Jordan. While it’s possible Chandler could shave his beard and/or cut his hair once Lanterns starts filming, this isn’t a look he’s typically known for between projects.
Lanterns will feature John Stewart as a new Green Lantern Corps recruit working alongside “Lantern legend” Hal Jordan to investigate a murder in America’s heartland. So, the full beard and medium gray hair arguably give Chandler’s Jordan the appearance of an older, more experienced Green Lantern. Fans last saw Hal Jordan in a live-action project in Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie, where he was a new Lantern Corps recruit who had just been bestowed with the ring that grants him superpowers. Making Chandler a veteran Green Lantern Corps member helps distinguish the DCU version of Hal Jordan from Reynolds’ much-maligned incarnation.
Reactions to Chandler’s potential Green Lantern look have been overwhelmingly positive. On Reddit, most fans approve of the Earth One appearance, a sign of confidence that Gunn and the Lanterns creative team are on the right track. Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie is still regarded as one of the worst superhero movies, and many fans consider Green Lantern an iconic DC character on par with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. So, there’s eagerness for a live-action adaption worthy of the character. So far, Lanterns is seemingly doing right by Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Lanterns will be released on HBO.
