Summary

  • Despite its age, Fallout 4 remains popular, with recent updates drawing many players back into the game.

A gamer has shared their amusing and timely life-saving level up while playing Fallout 4. A serendipitous ding has long been a welcome mechanic in video games, and countless players over the years have experienced the relief it brings when on the precipice of death in a game like Fallout 4. But it is still thrilling every time it occurs.

Recently, one player going by the name of HibernalGamer reminded fellow Redditors that many things, and not just war, never change in Fallout 4. One of those constants is the tense encounter with Captain Bridget, a seemingly implacable opponent entrenched at Hub City Auto Wreckers and equipped with one of Fallout 4’s Fat Man mini nuke launchers. She also sports some heavy combat armor and may even be traipsing around in power armor when encountered.

Needless to say, the meeting with Bridget can be a tough lesson learned for many players and may indeed require a reload and second attempt. HibernalGamer shared a video of their near-death experience with the Gunner captain, capturing the moment when they take a fiery Fat Man blast to the face only seconds before ridding Bridget of her head. The events play out in slow motion, thanks to the death cam featured in Bethesda’s Creation Engine games. This allows viewers witness the well-timed level up announcement that fortuitously saves HibernalGamer from possible death by immediately refilling their presumably depleted health.

Did a Timely Level Up Save the Fallout 4 Player?

Some Redditors in the comments pointed out that HibernalGamer may not have actually been about to die when they leveled up, as their HP bar isn’t visible onscreen during the death cam. Because they were using Fallout 4’s VATS to target Bridget, it is possible that the damage inflicted by the Fat Man was decreased and wouldn’t have been fatal. Fallout 3 and New Vegas reduce player damage received while in VATS by 90 and 25%, respectively. And it’s generally believed that Fallout 4 also dampens damage taken in VATS, though the exact percentage is not certain and different sources give conflicting info.

Despite its age — the game just celebrated its ninth anniversary — Fallout 4 still enjoys a loyal and active fan base, with many players citing the open-world trek through a post-apocalyptic Massachusetts as their favorite entry in the long-lived franchise. The most recent next-gen update for Fallout 4, which fixed or improved many issues on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles in May, helped draw many gamers back into the shoes of the Sole Survivor as they set out to find out what happened to their son.
