Did We Just Get A First Teaser of The New Superman Theme?

Summary

  • Superman fans are thrilled by a teaser of what is possibly the new film’s theme, which is very reminiscent of John Williams’s original work.
  • David Corenswet has been praised effusively for his role as Superman, with the film promising a return to the character’s more lighthearted side.
  • The upcoming release of the first trailer and minimal leaks create heightened excitement for the DCU film, set for a July 11, 2026 release.

So far, the DCU has been pretty good at keeping excitement for Superman high while releasing as little actual information about it as possible. Early this morning, fans finally got another taste of what’s to come.

Superman is without a doubt one of next year’s most anticipated films. People have been applauding how perfectly cast everyone is, from David Corenswet– who stars as the beloved titular character– to Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. Everyone that has worked with Corenswet insists that he was born to play the role, so much so that his character in Netflix’s The Politican is described as looking like Superman (all the way back in 2019, no less!). It is also reassuring that this is a true passion project for DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, who is directing the film himself. Gunn has been very active on social media, interacting with fans and being quick to deny false rumors before they can really get out of hand.

Superman director James Gunn revealed the first official photo of one of the Man of Steel’s best friends and a fan-favorite DC comics character.

December 16th proved to be a great morning for Superman fans when Corenswet shared a brand new official poster via Instagram. This would be exciting enough all on its own, but to further thrill people it included what could possibly be a small excerpt of the new Superman theme. It is clearly referencing iconic composer John Williams’s original theme from the 1978 movie starring Christopher Reeve, which is fitting considering the film has so far promised to be a return to the character’s more lighthearted and ‘wholesome’ side. However, it also seems like John Murphy (this film’s composer) has managed to make sure this theme is very much its own thing as well. It’s worth noting, too, that this may not be the official theme at all. It’s entirely possible that the variation on one of Williams’s most famous works was created solely to thrill fans and keep the anticipation going until we have the real thing. It’ll be just a little bit longer before we know for sure.

The film’s tagline is “Look up”, and we officially have a date for the release of the first trailer (the 19th). Other than set photos and a few official first looks here and there, things have been kept very quiet. Some potential plot details can be surmised from characters and situations spotted during filming this past summer, but everything has been speculation so far. Even leaks have been few and far between, which is impressive considering the sheer magnitude of a project like this. Luckily this appears to be working in Gunn’s favor so far, because people are extremely eager to know more and can’t wait for the film to come out.

Superman as a character means so much to so many, so there is a lot of pressure to get this right. There is also the fact that the film marks the beginning of the live-action DCU. DC has a long history of failing to achieve a cinematic universe that rivals the MCU, but it looks like they are finally track to do just that. Superman is already going head-to-head with The Fantastic Four: First Steps next July. Which will conquer the box office is up in the air at this point, but both films appear to be very promising in terms of quality. Regardless, the future of DC looks bright!
