Carry-On follows a man called Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) who works at LAX airport as a TSA officer, but he dreams of becoming a policeman. He works alongside his pregnant girlfriend, Nora, who works as an operations director for one of the airlines at LAX. The Christmas action movie sees the couple head to work for a busy shift ahead on the eve of the big day. Kopek ends up operating the x-ray machines after pushing his boss, Phil Sarkowski (Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris), into giving him more responsibilities in the job. However, things go awry when he picks up a discarded ear bud, and interacts with a terrorist/freelance facilitator, simply known as Traveler (Jason Bateman), who blackmails him into smuggling a nerve agent onto an upcoming flight. However, Ethan doesn’t know exactly what he is being forced to smuggle until much later on.
The traveler appears to know a lot about Ethan, and threatens to kill Nora if he doesn’t carry out his mission. Elsewhere, LAPD detective Elena Cole (Danielle Deadwyler) is investigating the incident at the Christmas tree farm, where the traveler killed a couple of people at the beginning of the movie, and she finds a bug that reveals the traveler’s plan to smuggle the nerve agent. Cole and DHS agent, John Alcott (Logan Marshall-Green) head to LAX to investigate further. However, the pair get into an altercation in the car when it is discovered Alcott is actually working with the traveler. After a scuffle, Cole shoots Alcott dead.
How does Carry On End?
Ethan refuses to hand the case over to the Traveler, so he shoots at him, but Ethan manages to get away. Traveler calls his watcher (Theo Rossi) and orders him to kill Nora, as Ethan isn’t complying with his demands. The watcher chases Nora through the airport while Cole tracks Ethan down and demands he reveal the plan for the nerve gas. Ethan pleads with her, and informs her of the traveler’s plan to release the nerve gas on the plane. Cole tries to cuff Ethan, but he hits her, and immediately apologizes and explains he needs to try and save his girlfriend, Nora. Ethan finds Nora, just as the watcher is about to shoot her, and he turns to take the bullet, but the man being held captive by the watcher shoots him dead just in time.
The traveler boards the plane, and the flight attendant insists on the carry-on case being taken down to cargo, as it’s too big to go on as hand luggage. Ethan has an idea to stop the traveler from exacting his plan, and tells Nora to inform Cole that she has to let the plane take off. She manages to convince Cole to let the plane take off, while Ethan rushes to reach the plane in a transport vehicle. Ethan manages to get onto the plane just as it takes off, and searches in the cargo area for the case. He finds it and opens it up to find the nerve agent. The traveler heads down to the cargo area and pulls a gun on Ethan, and shoots at him.
A loser, a waste and asleep
Ethan locks the traveler in a confined vacuum fridge and releases the nerve agent in there and shuts the door, and the traveler dies a painful death after being exposed to the nerve agent, and the plane lands safely, with no injury to any passengers. Ethan climbs off the plane and is immediately confronted by the police, but Cole calls them off, and Nora turns up to embrace him. One year later, Ethan and Nora, along with their new baby, are going through security at LAX to board a flight to Tahiti for a family holiday. As a customer whinges about how long it’s taking to get through security, Ethan reminds him the staff are just doing their jobs and shares a few smiles with his former colleagues. At the last moment, Ethan realizes he’s forgotten to put one more thing into the security tray: his LAPD badge.
