New Shaman King Manga Will Be The Final Arc

New Shaman King Manga Will Be The Final Arc

Summary

  • New sequel Shaman King Yard is confirmed as the final arc by creator Hiroyuki Takei.
  • No clear start date for serialization was announced by Kodansha.
  • The previous super star series had only 68 chapters and was published irregularly.

After finishing Shaman King: The Super Star, publisher Kodansha and creator Hiroyuki Takei confirmed a new sequel was already planned. This sequel, titled Shaman King Yard, is now confirmed to be the final Shaman King arc.

It is important to note that being the final arc does not necessarily mean the story will be short, it’s just that it will be the last (this series has not been adapted into animation, but the previous ones can be found on Netflix).

Netflix has given this classic shonen series a shiny new anime adaptation. Over 20 years after its initial release, does the new Shaman King hold up?

Kodansha is yet to announce when Shaman King Yard will start serialization, but Takei is already working on it. The final Shaman King: The Super Star is slated for January 8, 2025, and publishers use the release of new volumes as pretexts to make big announcements, so it’s possible (but unconfirmed) they will announce the serialization date in January 2025.

Shaman King The Super Star

The Super Star ran from 2018 to 2024, but it is only 68 chapters long (and the last volume will be the 10th). Serialization was irregular. The manga launched in the Shonen Magazine Edge, where it was published until the magazine shut down, in October 2023. The series would only resume almost a year later, in August 2024, on the Magazine Pocketwebmanga platform. It is likely the series was not planned to run for such a long time.

Shaman King Manga and Anime

The original Shaman King manga was published in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump magazine, running from 1998 to 2004. Creator Hiroyuki Takei also published a spin-off manga titled Funbari Poem (2003-2004) and the Shaman King: Zero prequel (2011-2014). The series spawned a popular anime adaptation in 2001-2002, by studio Xebec. In 2021-2022, a remake by studio Bridge aired in Japan, and was released internationally on Netflix.

While writing Zero, Takei started serializing the first sequel, Shaman King Flowers (2012-2014), still working for Shueisha. This series was compiled into 6 volumes and was recently adapted into animation by studio Bridge, after the remake finished airing (it’s also on Netflix).

Shaman King is about Yoh Asakura on his quest to become the Shaman King, but the sequel is about a new generation. Yoh’s son, Hana Asakura, goes on a journey through the Shaman world.

Then Takei moved to Kodansha and started Shaman King: The Super Stars, which continues the adventures of Hana Asakura. In the meantime, Kodansha acquired the rights to the series, and recompiled all previous Shaman King mangas. A few spin-off stories penned by Jet Kusamura (and one by Kusamura and Kyo Nuesawa) have been serialized in Kodansha’s manga magazines.
