What Happens In Kraven The Hunter?
Kraven the Hunter was a complete origin story of this character who has almost always appeared as a villain in television, video games, and comic appearances. However, this time around, the movie picks up as the titular character, Sergei Kravinoff, and his brother Dmitri are picked up from their boarding school by their father, Nickolai, who informs them that their mentally unstable mother has died and to bond and grow and overcome the loss, the trio are going on a hunting trip.
On this trip, the men run across an aggressive lion, who ends up attacking Sergei because Sergei won’t shoot him and mortally wounds the teen boy. He would have died without a young Calypso Ezili and her grandmother being present. Her grandmother gives Sergei a special elixir that saves his life and gives him a unique set of powers that mimic all the jungle animals. Once he regains consciousness, his father takes him home, and they have a falling out when he learns his father killed the same lion. Sergei leaves his familial home and brother and sets up shop in the far Eastern portion of Russia.
The movie flashes forward several years, and Sergei transforms into Kraven the Hunter, a near-mythical avenging angel who goes after crime lords similar to his father and poachers who dare to hunt in his Russian wilderness.
After killing several Russian mobsters, Sergei runs afoul of a villain known as the Rhino, who has the ability to form a thick armor-like hide over his skin as long as he disconnects a concoction he keeps in a backpack he’s always seen with. The Rhino hatches a plan using various henchmen including an assassin known as The Foreigner to kill or abduct Sergei when he returns home to see his brother on his brother’s birthday. However, Sergei can’t sleep on the comfortable beds inside and so sleeps outside, leading the baddies to kidnap Dmitri instead.
Sergei goes on the hunt for his brother and since he is known as The Hunter, he’s able to find him, even if it’s not clear just how he managed to do that even with his augmented sight.
Eventually, the battle moves to the woods where Sergei has to essentially take out the mobsters, Rhino and Foreigner. However, The Foreigner ends up being a little more than he can handle since he has the power to hypotize people for a few seconds when he makes eye contact with them. That hypnosis makes it seem as though he’s moving with super speed and he hits Kraven with a toxin that makes him see spiders and is then taken down.
However, it turns out that adult Calypso was nearby and had perviously talked about being very good with a bow and arrow. She wasn’t lying as she kills The Foreigner by putting an arrow through his eye. The pair then go off in search of Dmitri and Rhino.
How Does Kraven The Hunter End
The fight between Kraven and The Rhino come to a head when the Rhino allows his entire body to be overtaken by the Rhino skin and he becomes very hard to beat. However, eventually Kraven does find a way to essentially beat him to death with a herd of bison that have popped up in the movie several times.
While the villains are all defeated, it’s not really the end of the movie. There’s quite a bit of wrap up story telling about a year after the final fight and after Kraven found his father on a hunting trip and allows his father to be killed by a bear. When Kraven finds his brother, he assumes Dmitri has decided to walk the straight and narrow. However it turns out that his brother has taken over their father’s crime business. He also went to the same doctor that The Rhino went to and was given powers.
Dmitri had the ability to mimic almost any voice and now he also had the ability to change his face as well. He shows his brother this new power and then tells Sergei that their father left him something. Sergei goes back to their old house and found is iconic lion skin vest. He puts it on, becoming Kraven the Hunter, with the implication that he’s no longer a good guy.
