Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is set to be a new take on the world of Westeros within the format of an action RPG for mobile platforms, boasting an ambitious open-world direction despite these limitations. Developed under the official license of the HBO show, it appears to be grounded within the canon of the series with some notable attention to detail given what has been shown in its reveal trailer. There’s a clear point in the show’s chronology where Game of Thrones: Kingsroad seems to take place, but there are also some contradictory details in its footage which might make it tougher to recognize for some fans.
After a relatively isolated opening in the North, the game’s trailer teased viewers with a slew of high-profile cameos from key characters in Game of Thrones. Between these clips and the sightings of the supernatural elements that become more prominent in later seasons, Kingsroad will feature pivotal moments from a questionably new perspective. Regardless of any liberties its story will take, the title’s premise is largely based on events in the middle of the overall timeline.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is Officially Stated to Be Set During the Show’s Fourth Season
An Experience in the Midst of the Series Chronology
With the game’s official website confirming that the game is set in the aftermath of Game of Thrones‘ Red Wedding, the War of the Five Kings present in the first three seasons has mostly concluded. This lines up with the scenario of early Season 4, during the in-universe year of 301 AC, with the Wildlings on the march prior to the Battle Beneath the Wall and the later chaos of the arrival of Stannis Baratheon’s forces in the North.
Characters Largely Match Their Early S4 Appearances
Jon Snow beginning his role as the acting Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch of Game of Thrones is shown early in the trailer, and subsequent appearances by Jaime and Cersei Lannister line up with their places in Season 4. A prosthetic golden hand clearly marks Jaime as post-Season 3, but a shot of Cersei seated on the Iron Throne may be a less accurate embellishment meant to represent her influence after the tragedy of the Purple Wedding and Tyrion Lannister’s trial.
The Limits of the Canon Timeline Could Be Tested By Game of Thrones: Kingsroad’s References to Later Seasons
The Iconic Presence of Dragons and White Walkers Will Likely Require a Flexible Adaptation
Outside mostly grounded footage of events matching S4, Kingsroad has also been showcased to prominently feature creatures that don’t properly become threats until closer to the end of the show. Drogon is seemingly shown flying over a city in Westeros, which wouldn’t make sense considering that Game of Thrones‘ Daenerys Targaryen is still in Essos until Season 7. Similarly, the heavy focus on White Walkers and their wight forces goes against the gradual buildup which only saw them take center stage long after Season 7, but their role in the lore may been altered for the sake of making the game more appealing and recognizable to a wider audience.
Kingsroad’s Original Protagonist Might Necessitate Alternate Events
The custom protagonist of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad will be a member of the new House Tyre, signaling an inherent departure from the source material by having them interact with key members of the cast during dire times. The personal story of the player will probably be best supported by rewrites to certain events that accommodate their presence, and this can be extended to explain any discrepancies with the timeline of Season 4. While Kingsroad might utilize several elements which hadn’t yet appeared in GoT during its events, it’s still based within the earlier time of one of the series’ most lauded eras.
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones, based on the Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin, tells the sprawling story of warring families in Westeros. This includes the Starks, the Lannisters, the Baratheons, and the Targaryens. Along with human conflicts, Westeros is also threatened by the re-emergence of dragons, and an undead enemy from beyond the Wall.
