GreedFall 2's Early Access is Already Set to Differ From Baldur's Gate 3 in One Way

Greedfall 2: The Dying World is not what one would consider a traditional sequel. Despite being the follow-up to 2019’s Greedfall, it takes place three years before the events of the cult classic RPG. The game also makes some big changes to the combat systems established in its predecessor. Instead of being a straightforward action RPG a la The Witcher 3, Greedfall 2 is more akin to Star Wars: KOTOR or Dragon Age: Origins. Its combat is still real-time, but it can be intermittently paused mid-battle so that players can command their characters around. In addition to all this, Greedfall 2 developer Spiders is using an early access model for the game, something that the company didn’t do with the original Greedfall.

Although Greedfall 2 is intended to be a multiplatform title, it was released in early access exclusively for Windows PCs on September 24, 2024. According to the game’s Steam page, Spiders decided to take this route because it wanted to collect player feedback and know that it was “on the right track” with the game’s development. Reception to Greedfall 2 has been mixed so far, but since the developers aim to build upon its foundation in future updates, there’s good reason to believe that it could become a truly special game in due time. Unlike other RPGs, such as the universally acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, though, it appears Spiders is taking a unique approach to Greedfall 2‘s early access roadmap, particularly when it comes to the introduction of new regions.

Unlike BG3, Greedfall 2 is Receiving Major New Regions While Still Being in Early Access

Greedfall 2’s Setting Differs Significantly from Its Predecessor

Greedfall 2 plays out as a sort of reverse version of the original Greedfall. In the first game in the series, players assume the role of a colonizer who travels to the fictional island of Teer Fradee and has to deal with the indigenous peoples that inhabit it. In Greedfall 2, on the other hand, gamers play as a Teer Fradee native who gets kidnapped and is forcefully relocated to the continent of Gacane, the home of the settlers from Greedfall. The developers at Spiders intend to make the entirety of Gacane explorable in Greedfall 2, which is quite an ambitious goal. However, at the time of writing, only a select few locations are actually available in the game.

Spiders is Adding a New City to Greedfall 2’s Early Access Build, Something Larian Never Did with BG3

Players who check out Greedfall 2 on Steam right now can experience roughly 30% of the content it has to offer. Gamers can currently explore the regions of Teer Fradee, Thynia, and Uxantis in Greedfall 2‘s early access build, and they’ll be able to visit a major new location called Olima, City of Stars in the near future. Although this city was originally going to be added to the game sometime in autumn 2024, Spiders announced last month that it needed a bit more time to release the upcoming content in an acceptable shape.

Greedfall 2 getting entirely new regions during its early access state contrasts sharply compared to Baldur’s Gate 3 and how it was handled. BG3 was originally released in early access on Steam, all the way back in 2020. However, unlike Greedfall 2, no major new cities were added to the game when it was still in beta. The early access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 only contained one of three acts that would be included in the game’s final build. BG3‘s first act had just three regions: the Wilderness, the Underdark, and the Rosymorn Monastary Trail. All the other, more sizable locations from Acts 2 and 3, like the Shadow-Cursed Lands and the city of Baldur’s Gate itself, were not present in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s pre-1.0 builds.

Spiders’ Approach to Greedfall 2 Could Be Beneficial for the Game Long-Term

If Greedfall 2 followed the same path as Baldur’s Gate 3, Spiders would not get as much feedback from fans about the game’s new locations. On top of that, while the company’s current approach may make Greedfall 2: The Dying World‘s full release less exciting for existing players, it can improve the RPG’s quality in the long run.
