After early access success stories such as Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s increasingly clear that the open development process it offers can be a great way to make some truly special games. While Greedfall 2 aims to follow in those footsteps, however, its initial impressions have left a somewhat sour taste in the mouth. As developer Spiders looks to build on a launch that has been met by a ‘mixed’ user reception on Steam, it says that it was prepared for some parts of the game to miss the mark at release.
The original Greedfall remains one of those cult classics that you could certainly enjoy if you were on the hunt for more games like Baldur’s Gate 3. Nat’s Greedfall 2 early access impressions found the initial release to be decidedly too unfinished to stick with, however, with many visible placeholders, bugs, and frequent crashes impeding the experience. While we’ve seen the likes of BG3 perform fantastically through the early access process, and there’s certainly potential for Greedfall 2 to get there as well, Nat remarks that it “needs a lot of work” in its current state.
Spiders announced in November that update 0.2‘s release would be delayed “to address feedback and polish certain aspects of the game that were demanded by the community.” The major patch is set to introduce the new region of Olima, the City of Stars, along with another companion, a hub zone, and more quests. Additionally, it includes improvements to the battle system for a “faster, smoother, and more reactive combat experience,” better UI, and upgrades to character creation.
In a new post, Spiders explains that, while there’s still no date for its arrival, update 0.2 “will only be the first step” in the game’s ongoing journey. “We wish we could provide a release date, but we would rather wait until we’re certain,” it writes. “What we can promise is that our priority remains delivering a game that meets your expectations and takes your feedback into account. Ensuring your voices shape this journey has always been the goal of early access.”
It adds that the early access process has been “a challenging but rewarding experience. While some aspects hit the mark and were widely appreciated, some didn’t, but we expected it.” The team says “there’s much we’re excited to share,” but remarks, “some news will have to wait for the right time.” We do, however, get a glimpse of a new creature that’s on the way in update 0.2, seen below.
Another major change is also being made. Spiders notes that Alvida’s original voice actor was unable to continue recording “for reasons out of our control.” As such, the team has found a new person to fill the role, but will need to re-record all of her voice lines to ensure consistency across the board. It says “you can expect a change of cast for the next update and onwards for Alvida.”
The team thanks players for their support, saying it’s confident that 2025 “will be fantastic for Greedfall 2.” For now, here are the best turn-based RPGs on PC, along with the biggest upcoming PC games to also look forward to as the new year rolls in.
