What’s your dream Final Fantasy 14 crossover? I’m hopeful that some sort of FF7 event is on the way, but there are myriad IPs for Square Enix to collaborate with outside of its own series as well. The MMO has been around for over a decade at this point, and I firmly believe that big crossover events can only be good for the game’s longevity over the next ten years. Whatever your picks, though, there’s one lead developer at Square Enix who wants nothing more than for FF14 to crossover with League of Legends. So if that’s something you want too, now’s the time to make your voice heard.
With Dawntrail finally here, Final Fantasy 14 is the biggest it’s ever been. The game is even in the middle of a crossover with fellow Square Enix MMORPG FF11, now that the Echoes of Vana’diel Alliance Raid series is underway, and it’s some of the most mechanically engaging content on offer at the moment. But I’m always excited to know what FF14 has planned, especially when it comes to working with other IPs. That’s why I couldn’t be more excited to learn that lead battle content designer Masaki Nakagawa wants to work with Riot on some kind of League of Legends crossover.
“I personally love League of Legends and have been playing the game for a long time, so a crossover with them would be a dream come true,” Nakagawa tells GamesRadar in a new interview. “It would be great fun if Aatrox and Aurelion Sol were featured as raid bosses in FF14. It might also be quite interesting to have FF14 characters implemented as crossover champions in League of Legends! If a Riot Games representative is reading this, it would be an honor if I could speak with you!”
While we wait to hear if Riot will answer Nakagawa’s call, it’s not just LoL that he’s interested in seeing come to FF14. Nakagawa also wants the MMO to crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 series, but thinks the team will need to wait for the current remake trilogy to wrap up first.
“I personally would love to do a crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, though it’s being developed by a separate team in our company,” Nakagawa continues. “Even if it were to happen, I imagine it would have to be after the FF7 Remake trilogy is complete, but it is very exciting to think about designing crossover content with various FF7 characters and bosses. That being said, I absolutely do not want to interfere with the FF7 team’s development right now, so I’d like to perhaps bring it up with them when an appropriate opportunity arises.”
Even FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi wants to cross over with FF14, so at this point, I think it’s just a matter of time. While it might take a while, at least we know Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is about to come to PC to keep us busy in the meantime.
Now that the dust has settled on the expansion, I can’t recommend that you read Ken’s Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail review enough. It might still be early days for patch content, but the current slate of dungeons and trials set up what might just be the MMO’s next big moment.
