Wonder Woman Game Gets Disappointing Update

Wonder Woman Game Gets Disappointing Update

Summary

  • Highly anticipated Wonder Woman game likely delayed past targeted 2026 release.
  • Warner Bros. Games facing challenges with recent flops like Suicide Squad.
  • Fans’ hopes are pinned on Monolith to deliver Wonder Woman’s awaited solo game.

The highly anticipated Wonder Woman game is reportedly not likely to meet the release schedule internally targeted by devs. Since being announced in 2021, there have been little to no updates on the status of Monolith’s Wonder Woman game.

As one of the superheroes in DC’s highly celebrated trinity, which also includes Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman has emerged as an iconic pop-culture figure over the decades. From her comic book origins in 1941 to her latest starring role on the big screen in 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984, the Amazonian superhero has made her presence felt in a variety of different media. Coming to video games released in the recent past, she has been featured in multiple titles, ranging from the MultiVersus fighting game to the disastrous Suicide Squad live-service game. At present, a new single-player title—featuring Wonder Woman as the protagonist—is in the works at Warner Bros Games-owned studio and Middle-earth: Shadow of War creator Monolith. However, there are reported concerns about the open-world title making it through on time.

Monolith’s Wonder Woman Project Highlights the Need for a Proper Superman Game

Monolith is still hard at work on a Wonder Woman adaptation, which serves as a bittersweet reminder of the lack of a modern Superman game.

A dev working on the Wonder Woman project said that the team was aiming to roll out the game in “like 2026,” as revealed by insider Jason Schreier on the Triple Click podcast (via Comicbook). He continued that the source opined the targeted year was “unrealistic,” suggesting Monolith’s game could very well be pushed back further. It’s also worth noting that Schreier’s conversation with the dev reportedly took place “a while back,” leaving room for any possible changes in plans that may have happened since then. Moreover, a few days back, Schreier had also shared that the Wonder Woman game was announced before its development had truly begun, offering a reason for the lack of official updates since then.

Disheartening News About the Wonder Woman Game Comes During a Tough Year for Warner Bros Games

The disappointing news about the Wonder Woman game basically sums up what has been a challenging year, overall, for publisher Warner Bros Games. Warner Bros.’s biggest game of 2024, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, experienced a horrible release and is now set to lose its post-launch support as well. To make things worse, there have also been reports of developer Rocksteady facing layoffs in the wake of the live-service game’s poor showing. Moreover, another Warner Bros. title based on the popular Harry Potter IP, Quidditch Champions, didn’t fare well either after coming out in September.

With the Wonder Woman game now being one of the major forthcoming projects under Warner Bros., the focus naturally shifts to the team at Monolith. Fans would hope that the poor performances elsewhere haven’t scuppered the progress of the DC superhero’s much-awaited single-player outing.
