The Dragon Ball franchise is very big. It contains plenty of series, movies, specials, video games, and more. Plenty of them fit together well, but there are some stories that contradict others. For example, Goku doesn’t have the power to reach the level of Super Saiyan Blue in Dragon Ball GT, despite the series taking place after Dragon Ball Super.
The reason for this is that not every story in the Dragon Ball universe is considered a part of the same canon. That explains why there are some inconsistencies. However, it also prompts the question: what Dragon Ball stories are canon? Here is the answer to that.
The Dragon Ball Canon Rules
Traditionally, everything that is part of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga is considered canon. So, when it comes to the anime, everything that is adapted from the original manga is canon.
At one time, that meant that everything outside of it wasn’t canon. Yet, those rules have changed a bit, mainly due to the addition of the Dragon Ball Super manga.
Now, everything from either manga is canon. Plus, there are now a few select things that weren’t in the manga that are still canon. So, the rules have gotten more complicated.
Every Series And Movie That’s Canon
Here is a list of every series and movie that is confirmed to be canon:
Name |
Type |
---|---|
Dragon Ball |
Series |
Dragon Ball Z (And Dragon Ball Z: Kai) |
Series |
Dragon Ball Z: Battle Of Gods |
Movie |
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ |
Movie |
Dragon Ball Super |
Series |
Dragon Ball Super: Broly |
Movie |
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero |
Movie |
Dragon Ball Daima |
Series |
This means the likes of Dragon Ball GT and most of the Dragon Ball movies aren’t canon. In fact, when it comes to all the movies prior to the Battle of Gods, Akira Toriyama once said in an interview that they exist in a different dimension from the main story.
There are some filler arcs in the anime series that aren’t part of the manga. So, not everything in the shows is canon, but the main arcs are.
