The Dragon Ball franchise is very big. It contains plenty of series, movies, specials, video games, and more. Plenty of them fit together well, but there are some stories that contradict others. The reason for this is that not every story in the Dragon Ball universe is considered a part of the same canon. That explains why there are some inconsistencies. However, it also prompts the question: what Dragon Ball stories are canon? Here is the answer to that.

The Dragon Ball Canon Rules

Traditionally, everything that is part of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga is considered canon. So, when it comes to the anime, everything that is adapted from the original manga is canon.

At one time, that meant that everything outside of it wasn’t canon. Yet, those rules have changed a bit, mainly due to the addition of the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Now, everything from either manga is canon. Plus, there are now a few select things that weren’t in the manga that are still canon. So, the rules have gotten more complicated.
