Original Sin Just Be A Set Up For The Sequel?

Warning! This article contains spoilers from Dexter: Original Sin Episode 1.

Summary

  • Fans finally got confirmation that present-day Dexter survived a gunshot to the chest.
  • Dexter: Original Sin hints at the setup for Resurrection but offers intriguing potential.
  • Original Sin’s success could lead to multiple seasons exploring Dexter’s backstory.

Dexter: Original Sin launched on Paramount+ with Showtime this week, and fans finally got confirmation that present day Dexter Morgan survived a gun shot to the chest. The action flashed back to 1991, and young Dexter was preparing for his first kill, before joining Miami Metro Homicide as an intern. Original Sin has successfully set up Michael C. Hall’s return in the sequel series, Resurrection, but there’s plenty more drama to explore with Dexter’s backstory.

It hasn’t been confirmed if the prequel series will be renewed for a second season yet, and it’s probably too early for a decision on that with Dexter: Original Sin episode 1 only just airing. However, it would be a shame if the series was just a one season set up for the sequel and nothing more. Patrick GIbson nailed every nuance of the serial killer character, and the supporting cast were promising, so here’s hoping for a fully fleshed out long-running series.

Soon after the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin aired, Paramount+ with Showtime released a short teaser trailer for the new sequel, Resurrection, which is due for release in summer 2025. The Dexter-verse is expanding after the 2021 limited series, Dexter: New Blood became the biggest ever hit for Showtime. However, it’s unclear if the Dexter prequel series exists solely to set up the sequel, especially as Michael C. Hall is narrating his life as his life flashes before his eyes while he recovers from a gunshot wound. When Dexter is inevitably ‘resurrected’, that could spell the end of his voiceover in the prequel, and possibly the end of the exploration of his origin story in Original Sin.

It would be a real shame if this was the case as the opening episode of Original Sin set up a very intriguing premise. Michael C. Hall confirmed to Variety back in August that Resurrection could run for multiple seasons, but there has been no indication whether Original Sin will keep going as well. Patrick Dempsey’s contract on Original Sin also hints that it could potentially just be a one-season job. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in September, he said:

I’ve only signed on for one year, so who knows? I love being on the show, but you never know what could happen.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Original Sin will make way for Resurrection, as it’s common practice to hand out rolling one-year contracts to actors on a brand-new show. Also, just because Dempsey’s character, Miami Metro chief, Aaron Spencer, might not be sticking around past one season, it doesn’t mean the show will end.

Original Sin Is Bound To Be A Huge Success, So Another Season Is Very Likely

Original Sin showrunner, Clyde Phillips, has surely learned his lesson when it comes to trying to end Dexter’s story prematurely, after supposedly killing off the character in the final episode of New Blood, only for the limited series to become Showtime’s biggest ever hit. The decision to retcon New Blood’s ending came about after Paramount merged with Showtime, and demanded a sequel and a prequel in the Dexter-verse. Phillips and his writing team began trying to figure out a way for Dexter to actually be alive in a sequel series, and chose to tie it in with the prequel series, Original Sin.

If, as expected, Original Sin is a ratings hit on the streaming platform, the eagerness will be there to expand the prequel series into multiple seasons, similarly to how Resurrection is set to play out. Dexter’s backstory has plenty of avenues to explore, so it wouldn’t feel like it was happening purely to line the pockets of the executives at Paramount. If the fans want more, and the creative team are able to deliver high quality stories, a sophomore run of Original Sin is a no-brainer.
