My Happy Marriage Season 1: A Genre-Bending Romance

Through its remarkable genre-bending approach, My Happy Marriage proved to be one of the best romance anime in recent years.

Season two is scheduled to premiere on January 6, 2025, and will likely be added simultaneously to Netflix, as happened to the first season.

A Cinderella-Like Story

My Happy Marriage hit the hearts of fans with its historical setting, supernatural themes, and a Cinderella-like story. The story is set during the Taisho Era (1912-1926) and follows Miyo Saimori, who is forced into servitude by her abusive stepmother. Dreaming this nightmare will end when she marries, Miyo soon finds out her family-arranged fiancée is Kiyoka Kudou, known to be cold and cruel. After moving to live at his house, Miyo starts discovering that her future husband might not be such a monster.

The anime is based on the same name novel written by Akumi Agitogi. It was first self-published online in Japan, and later acquired by Kadokawa in 2019. Eight volumes have been released under the Fushimi Shobo label since then, all illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka. Yen Press publishes the books in the US.

A manga adaptation by Rito Kohsaka is also ongoing since 2018, with five volumes so far. Square Enix publishes the manga both in Japan and in the US. A live-action movie was released exclusively in Japanese theaters in March 2023.

Where to Watch and What’s Next

My Happy Marriage E12 Miyo Figth With Kiyoka

My Happy Marriage premiered last year on July 5 and the first season ended with 12 episodes on September 20, 2023. Netflix streams the series, with subbed and dubbed options. Episodes were added simultaneously to their release in Japan.

A special episode premiered on Netflix last month. Despite being tagged as “episode 13”, it is actually an OVA originally released in Japan back in March, as part of a special bundle for the 8th volume of the novel. It is worth noticing that Netflix does not usually acquire rights to stream content originally meant to be only available to buyers of special bundle volumes — however, it would be too soon to know if this is only an exception or if it might mean Netflix is taking a different approach to anime.

Netflix already confirmed it will stream the new episodes.
