This guide will cover the first section of The Spirit of the Samurai in its entirety. That means we’ll take you through all the fetch quests you’ll do at the beginning of the game, we’ll cover working your way through the zombie-filled manor, and we’ll cover the dungeon that you’ll work through to leave the village.

The Spirit Of The Samurai can be a pretty tough game, these tips will help you overcome it.
Every mission is given its own section in this walkthrough, and they are all in chronological order. You’ll notice that some missions remain unresolved for long stretches of time while you complete other, smaller missions. Don’t worry about that, you won’t miss anything if you just follow our guide.
Go To The Watchtower
This will be the first mission you get. The moment you step outside of your house, you’ll get it. Just head directly to the left, then, once you get to the tower, climb the ladder and talk to “Vigilant” at the top of the tower. You’ll now get the “Find Minamoto” mission.
Find Minamoto
Climb down from the tower, and head to the right until you run into a villager with a hoe going to town on some dirt. Talk to the farmer with the hoe (he’s just a little to the right of the watchtower). He’ll then tell you that Anako is looking for you. Agree to go find her (you’re going to have to do it no matter what). We’re going to shift our attention to that one now. We’ll worry about Minamoto later.
If you go find Minamoto, he’ll just tell you to go talk to Anako first anyway. So don’t bother.
Find Nails
When you see the gentleman who is hammering away at a wooden cart, talk to him. He’ll ask you to get him some nails. The nails are inside the house to the left of him. Just grab them, bring them back to him, and you’ll be rewarded with some experience points.
Talk To Anako
Anako is hanging out in her house. You’ll find her place to the right of the save spot (which is to the right of the man sharpening his sword). Once inside, Aanako will ask you to retrieve the Willow Bark Powder. Head to the left, and go back into your house – if you don’t remember which one that is, it is the house to the left of the one the man who’s fixing his kart is in front of. With the Will Bark Powder in hand, head back to Anako, give it to her, and you’ll get some experience. Now we can go find Minamoto…
You need to head into the back room of the house, so look for an opening when inside and press up to enter into that back room. The Willow Bark Powder is in a box near the bed.
Head to the right of Anako’s place, and head up. You’ll run into Minamoto and Naru here. You’ll now engage in a basic tutorial section. Just follow the prompts, attack, block, roll, parry… etc. Once you have gone through the motions, you’ll be tasked with defeating Naru.
Defeat Naru
I’m not convinced you can even lose to Naru, he doesn’t appear to do enough damage. However, this is a good opportunity to practice parrying and such. Once you have beaten Naru.
Go Back To The Watchtower
Minamoto will tell you to head to the watchtower. So, head to the left. Partway there, you’ll run into Naru who’ll tell you he’ll wait for you. Climb the tower (again). After climbing to the top, and witnessing the horde of winged demons flying toward the village, climb down and head back to Naru. However, before you reach him, you’ll be knocked unconscious.
In your nightmare you will unlock a new skill. After equipping it (the game will walk you through the process), head to the right, fighting your way through the army of shadowy figures. Once you reach the end, you will wake up, and you’ll need to find Chisai (your cat).
Find Chisai
The moment you gain control again, you’ll encounter massive, demonic spiders. These creatures are completely incapable of defending themselves, so you can more or less just whale on them. As you work your way through these creatures, make sure to break open every barrel you encounter. There is some good stuff in there, including healing potions. Just keep heading to the right, and you’ll run into Anako. She’ll tell you that you need to get to the other side of the house, and says that the key is inside.
Find Anako’s Key
Once inside the house, you’ll encounter the zombie samurai. These foes will defend, and they like to lunge forward with a giant slash. Roll past them when they do and attack their backs. Head to the third floor of the house. You’ll find a Shoto in the room on the left. There’s other stuff in here as well, but the Shoto is the most valuable bit. Move to the right side of the third floor, and you’ll find the key on a box in the corner of the room. This will complete the Find Anako’s Key mission, and start the Fina Anako mission.
Find Anako
Now, head back down to the bottom floor. The room on the far right of the house, the one to the left of the exit on the right, holds the “Flying Strike” scroll. Leave through the door on the right, and you will fight the first Shield Bearing Zombie. Roll past it when it begins its stabbing attack, then slash it in the back. Head to the right, and you will encounter the locked well. Unlock it, head down, head to the left, and you’ll run into Anako. She’ll tell you she is preparing something to help you, and asks you to find a To-Ki Root.
Find To-Ki Root
The To-Ki Root is in the storage room to your right. Just head inside, head to the back of the room, and grab the root. Bring the root to Anako and she’ll give you a potion.
Make sure to clear out all the other stuff as well, there are tons of goodies down here.
Fight Off The Horde
You’ll need to fight off a wave of zombies. Watch out, there are two archers in this group. Don’t push too far forward, or you’ll end up fighting a bunch of them simultaneously. Just draw them in and fight them off one by one. If you hear someone drawing a bow duck to dodge the arrow. Once you kill them all, head the way Anako went. We’re now back to looking for Chisai, but we’ll need to do it by working our way through a trap-filled dungeon.
You’ll now be below the house. Head to the right and crawl under the spike traps on the ceiling. If you aren’t crouching, you will be instantly killed. When you encounter a spike pit, perform a running jump. You’ll crawl through some tight spaces heading to the right. Once you get to the right side of the floor, you’ll climb down a ladder. To the right of the ladder, you’ll find the basement key. From there, unlock the gate, head to the left, then climb down another ladder.
This next trap is tricky. You’ll need to jump over a spike pit and then immediately duck under another spike trap (that’ll be coming for your head). The same will be true for the next one as well. So, from now on, just duck the moment you land from a jump. Just in case. You’ll now head down and around. You’ll be hopping over massive spikes and climbing ladders while fighting zombies. Eventually, while following the path forward, you’ll end up outside the village, and you will be reunited with Chisai. You’re now finished with the village section of the game. You’ll now be off to fight the fearsome Shuten-Doji, but that is a whole other guide.
