Elden Ring Nightreign Might Be Referencing Bloodborne's Lady Maria

Summary

  • Just a few days ago, FromSoft surprised us all with Elden Ring Nightreign, a standalone roguelike adventure.
  • That’s not all it is, though, as Nightreign also contains a bunch of mechanics and characters from FromSoft’s past.
  • Some fans even think that Bloodborne’s Lady Maria is being referenced with a currently unknown character.

Bloodborne fans think that a mysterious character in the reveal trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign might be a reference to Lady Maria. That might sound like reaching, but stick with us here.

Despite previously claiming that it wasn’t working on anything to do with Elden Ring, FromSoft surprised us all at The Game Awards when it announced Elden Ring Nightreign, a standalone roguelike take on the base game that lets you team up with two other friends and go up against a host of deadly, and very familiar, enemies.

The Nameless King is a gimme, but did you spot the other two?

Beyond being the continuation of Elden Ring that none of us were expecting to see so soon, one of the most surprising things about Nightreign is how it brings together a bunch of features from previous FromSoft games. The trailer showed off a bunch of bosses and enemies from Dark Souls, such as the Parasite Spider and Centipede Demon, while hinting at mechanics from Sekiro like clambering up walls.

Is Nightreign Referencing Bloodborne’s Lady Maria?

Further deep dives into Nightreign have made it clear that FromSoft is collecting a bunch of known ideas and characters for the game, and that even seems to apply to Bloodborne. At one point in the trailer, a mysterious character with a white ponytail and cloak is shown brandishing a dagger in a very familiar manner to Lady Maria.

From the moment that the Nightreign trailer was released, Bloodborne fans have highlighted the character, with some choosing to believe that it’s actually Lady Maria in the Elden Ring universe. While that isn’t confirmed just yet, considering how many other bosses and characters from across FromSoft’s games are here, it isn’t the most far-fetched thing. That is if FromSoft can even do that with Sony owning Bloodborne.

Over on Twitter and the Elden Ring subreddit, a lot of fans are pointing out the similarities between the two and discussing whether it could really be her. Although there are some true believers out there, most have settled on the fact that it’s a nice callback and meant to be someone who invokes Lady Maria’s vibe as a callback to Bloodborne.

We won’t know for sure until Nightreign launches in 2025, but it’s unarguable that the character is at least meant to make us think of Lady Maria, an affect it’s clearly achieved. Now how about that Bloodborne remaster, FromSoft?
