Crunchyroll Announces New Anime Acquisitions

Crunchyroll revealed their acquisition of various anime titles set to be available on the streaming service, as well as their acquisition of the theatrical rights to Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK for select territories, at CCXP 2024 at SP Expo held in São Paulo, Brazil on Thursday, December 5.

Fans who attended were also treated to brand-new trailers for the upcoming 3rd season of Fire Force, the highly-anticipated original MAPPA anime Zenshu and a teaser for the upcoming series, To Be a Hero, set to hit Crunchyroll in January. Here’s the full list of titles they announced, and a little bit more about them.

Crunchyroll’s Newly Acquired Titles

Nyaight of the Living Cat

Based on the manga of the same name created by Hawkman and illustrated by Mecha-Roots, Nyaight of the Living Cat is a post-apocalyptic fantasy set in a world where a virus turns anybody who touches a cat into one, boasting an interesting staff roll including live-action film director Takashi Miike as executive director, with Tomohiro Kamiya sitting in the director’s chair for the first time in his career.

Run! The Adorable Cats Are Here. In 20XX, the world is dominated by cats. A virus which turns anyone who touches a cat into a cat has spread into a worldwide nyandemic. Cats rub against people, turning them into cats. Can humanity fight their urge to pet cats to survive in this cat-ridden world?

Magic Maker: How to Make Magic in Another World

Based on the light novel Magic Maker ~Isekai Maho no Tsukurikata~ by Kazuki Kaburagi, the series follows a man who unexpectedly dies on his 30th birthday and wakes up as Sion, the son of a lower-class noble family in a strange fantasy world. Together with his sister, Marie, Sion sets out on an adventure to discover magic, bringing to life the dream he had in his previous life to one day wield magic.

Grisaia Phantom Trigger

Set years after The Fruit of Grisaia, an institution called SORD (Special Organization for Research & Development), a training school dedicated to fostering talent specifically for national defense, has replaced what was once “Mihama Academy”. Rena and Maki are firearms specialists, Toka and Gumi are expert snipers, Chris specializes in data processing and explosives, while Murasaki is a skilled ninja specializing in espionage. This ragtag bunch is who the police and Self-Defense Forces call upon when a situation is too complex, even for them, putting the young girls face-to-face with death on a regular basis.

Farmagia

Based on the Farmagia video game, with character designs by Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima and direction by FAIRY TAIL ZERO chief director Akihiko Sano, Farmagia follows the titular farmers living in the land of Felicidad where they raise monsters under the peaceful rule of the Magus Dilculucum. However, after the Magus’s death, various forces attempt to seize control, forcing the Farmagia known as Ten and his allies to stand against the despotic rule of Glaza, using their home-grown monsters to defend their freedom.

Teogonia

Based on the light novel series by Tsukasa Tanimai with illustrations by Koichiro Kawano, which later got adapted into a illustrated by Shunsuke Aoyama in 2018, Teogonia is a fantasy isekai set in a world where humans fight to protect their land from invading demi-human tribes. A boy named Kai, from the village of Lag, one day joins the fight and watches as his comrades are felled one by one. After sustaining injury in the battle, Kai suddenly remembers things from another life.

Crunchyroll Also Showed Trailers For Highly-Anticipated Titles

At their panel, Crunchyroll also got fans hyped with showings of brand-new “world premiere” trailers of the upcoming third season of Fire Force, the upcoming ZENSHU anime which follows an animator who is struggling to get anything done on her studio’s new project – with a certain twist; and finally, a teaser trailer for To Be Hero X was shared, showcasing the various teams working on the project around the world. The story is set in a world of superheroes, where “trust” is the defining factor of a hero’s abilities.

If people believe a hero can fly, they will gain the ability to do so, but on the other hand, if a hero with special powers loses the trust of the public, they stand to lose their abilities as well. Trust is collected as data, and every two years, the top heroes compete in a hero tournament, with their performance having an impact on their trust value. The number 1 hero is granted the title of “X”. The upcoming series is produced by animation studio BeDream, while Link Click director Li Haolin takes on the director’s seat. The eXciting new series hits Crunchyroll in January 2025.

In addition to the To Be Hero X trailer, Crunchyroll will be streaming the second season of Unnamed Memory will hit Crunchyroll this January and the platform has also obtained the theatrical rights for the dark epic fantasy omnibus movie Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK for select territories in Latin America, including Brazil, North America, EMEA, and Australia / New Zealand. The film, which is a compilation of the final episodes which adapted the last five chapters of the Attack on Titan manga by Hajime Isayama, is set for release in early 2025.
