Rumor: 2003 Sonic Game Could Be Making a Comeback
According to a well-known source, Sega and Sonic Team are planning on bringing back one of the Sonic franchise’s well-known 2003 titles.
Based on a post by Sonic Stadium on Twitter, the Google metadata for the game’s website, as well as the YouTube video description of the Sega Asia (English) version of the reveal trailer for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, contains a brief synopsis of its premise. It first mentions how players are going to “drift between dimensions,” which ties into the portal that fans saw in the trailer. However, it also states that players will be able to race across “land, sea, air, space, and time” in the game. The mention of racing across different terrains brings to mind 2012’s Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed mascot kart racer for some fans.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Might Have Similarities to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a Sonic racing game spin-off that features transforming vehicles, with a player being able to shift between a car, boat, and plane mode during certain points in a race. These transformations usually allow players to access certain paths or traverse difficult terrain. Certain racetracks can also terraform in the middle of the race, giving players the chance to switch between different playstyles during a lap. As such, some speculate that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds could be using these mechanics in its gameplay.
While Shadow’s car is the main focus of the cinematic trailer, some fans suspect that the Extreme Gear airboards from Sonic Riders could also be a vehicle type, based on how one can possibly be seen hanging on a wall. The airboards being able to traverse over different areas as described by Sega seem to add credence to this theory as well. Some fans are also speculating the CrossWorlds part of the title could also lead to more Sega characters like NiGHTs or Ulala crossing over to the game as well.
