For many years, Atomic Heart was touted by fans as the next BioShock, since its retrofuturistic setting, enthralling art design, and unique gameplay seemed to share a lot in common with the seminal 2007 FPS. However, the game ultimately wasn’t able to live up to those lofty expectations. Upon its release, Atomic Heart garnered mixed-to-positive reviews from critics; some praised it for its ambitious nature and stunning visuals, while others criticized it for its clunky combat and poor dialogue. The reception from fans, though, was markedly more positive. Although Atomic Heart wasn’t the genre-defining masterpiece some hoped it would be, it was still praised by gamers on sites like Steam for being an inventive, albeit somewhat janky, first-person shooter.
Mundfish, the independent developer behind Atomic Heart, has yet to provide any sales statistics for its divisive title, but it appears to have done very well. Despite launching directly into Xbox Game Pass, sales for the 2023 sci-fi FPS are apparently above the company’s expectations. Given that it’s a commercial success, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Mundfish has continuously released additional content for Atomic Heart more than a year after its initial launch. On January 28, 2025, in fact, the studio intends to launch a brand-new DLC for Atomic Heart that continues the main story of the base game.

A New DLC for Atomic Heart is Being Released Next January
“Enchantment Under the Sea” Features a New Underwater Location and Some New Weapons
Earlier this week, Mundfish gave Atomic Heart fans their first proper look at the next expansion for the retrofuturistic FPS. In this new DLC, titled “Enchantment Under the Sea,” players are once again placed in the shoes of the talkative Soviet veteran Sergey “P-3” Nechayev, who must explore a new region in Facility 3826 to find a way to save humanity from the ongoing robot uprising. As its name suggests, “Enchantment Under the Sea” primarily takes place in an underwater laboratory called the Neptune Research Center. It, much like the city of Rapture from BioShock, is submerged under the ocean and is overrun with hostile creatures.
As players make their way through the Neptune Research Center and revisit some of the familiar locations in Facility 3826, they will come across all-new types of enemies, such as the shambling coral mutants and the deadly MO-R4Y. Luckily, “Enchantment Under the Sea” adds some new weapons and abilities to Atomic Heart that players can use to defend themselves from these dangerous threats. The DLC not only includes a powerful, electrically-charged hammer called the Thunderclap, but also a customizable double-barrel shotgun dubbed the KM-4 Kuzmich. Best of all, it even features a grappling hook that can deal damage to enemies and a new polymer skill that lets players shoot fireballs out of their hands.
The new grappling hook in “Enchantment Under the Sea” is called a Whip, and in addition to being usable as a weapon, it can allow players to dodge attacks, pull themselves towards enemies, and reach areas that were previously inaccessible.
Atomic Heart’s Upcoming DLC Will Probably Be Short in Length
“Enchantment Under the Sea” seems fairly similar in scope to the last two DLCs for Atomic Heart, “Annilation Instinct” and “Trapped in Limbo.” Since both of these expansions were roughly 3 to 4 hours in length, it’s safe to assume that “Enchanted Under the Sea” will have an equally short runtime, as well. These DLCs are only $10 each, after all, so players shouldn’t expect them to be overflowing with new content.
Like with all previous DLCs, “Enchantment Under the Sea” will be available at no extra cost to those who have purchased the $40 Atomic Pass bundle, which is included in the Gold and Premium Editions for Atomic Heart. Owners of the previously mentioned pass and/or editions will also get access to Atomic Heart‘s upcoming fourth DLC, which Mundfish has yet to reveal.
