Warframe 1999 is finally available after over a year of teases and demos

1999 was a strong year. We got the first Unreal Tournament, the first Silent Hill, The Matrix, Korn’s Issues and Rage Against The Machine’s The Battle of Los Angeles, to name a few seminal releases. Now it’s the backdrop of Warframe 1999, the online shooter’s retro-tinged new expansion that’s playable right this second.

Warframe 1999 treads some of the history that’s led to the constant era of the multiplayer game. It centers on a group of Protoframes who spend New Year’s Eve trying to prevent a cybernetic virus from taking hold in the city of Höllvania as part of an insurgent operation.

The six heroes are known as the Hex, and they’re trying to find Dr Entrati before things become catastrophic. It’s a solid premise for a new chapter of the action game that provides plenty of opportunity for the mix of narrative and combat regular Tenno players have come to expect.

After over a year of teases and build, the Warframe 1999 release date has arrived. The amount of romance dialogue and other elements have been touted by Digital Extremes, as it’s a distinctly character-focused addition to the overall canon.

To start, you’re in control of Arthur, who has connections to Excalibur. Each of the other Hex have some characteristics of other Tenno. They were all infected with Helminth, but didn’t fully change into Tenno.

Though still sci-fi and futuristic-feeling, the fashion, language and vibe have a truly ’90s flair to them, and if you’re someone who remembers that time, there’s definitely a strain of nostalgia. The intro song is ‘Into The Void’ by Nine Inch Nails, just to really set the atmosphere.
