Virtua Fighter has been a pretty dormant franchise for quite a while, with the last title in the series coming in 2012 with Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. It’s been almost 13 years since the last game, but that drought finally looks to be over, as a new Virtua Fighter is confirmed to be in development at Sega, with Yakuza developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios at the helm.
Unfortunately, just like with a lot of games during this year’s showcase, we didn’t get a lot of details during the announcement. All the trailer showed off was a shadowy silhouette of a man throwing someone through a wall and then walking away all cool like, before getting into another scrap with a lady.
Virtua Fighter’s Next Game Is Being Made By Yakuza Devs
We didn’t get a release date either, so we might be waiting for a good long time before we get our hands on it. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait that long for more details about the title, as Sega announced that a special Virtua Fighter direct is also taking place today, so there should be plenty of deets to go over there.

It’s also worth pointing out that Ryu Ga Gotoku has a scary amount of output at the moment. With the announcement of Virtua Fighter, the studio currently has at least three games in active development, including Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and the newly announced title called Project Century. They’re busy boys, and it’s great.
The Game Awards gave us plenty of other bangers not developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku too, including a first look at The Witcher 4, which revealed that Ciri is going to be the main protagonist. We also got a look at a new Elden Ring game called Elden Ring: Nightreign, which will be a co-op title that will see players teaming up to take down big enemies.
Other big announcements during the show include the shadowdropping of the Illuminate, as well as a fun little Ninja Gaiden game from the Blasphemous developers.
