In a night that was full of surprises and reveals, undoubtedly one of the biggest was the cinematic trailer for The Witcher 4, which finally confirmed its official name and that Ciri is going to be the main protagonist. This is despite the fact that the game only just recently entered full development and that we’re unlikely to see it for quite some time.

As exciting as it was to see Ciri step into her own Witcher role after so much teasing in The Witcher 3, one of the biggest questions that fans unsurprisingly had has been about the status of Geralt, the other main protagonist of the series. We have no idea if he’s going to show up in the game, but it seems that it’s not as unlikely as you might assume.
Don’t Worry, Geralt Of Rivia Isn’t “Going Anywhere”
Shortly after the reveal of The Witcher 4, IGN posted an article talking to two CD Projekt Red developers about “the lore you need to know” for the game. While this mostly serves as a way to catch up fans on the world of The Witcher and Ciri’s role in it, the feature does contain a very interesting response to whether Geralt might show up.
When asked about the possibility of Geralt returning, franchise and lore designer (as well as TheGamer alum!) Cian Maher was a little cagey about his response but made it clear that Geralt hasn’t suffered a bad fate. Maher said that Geralt will “probably” be around for a long time, and that he actually makes a heavily implied appearance in the epilogue to Season of Storms, which takes place 101 years after The Witcher 3.

And in that epilogue there is a certain white-haired Witcher hunting a monster who remains unnamed, but who behaves in a certain way. And obviously he has white hair. Maher ended his statement on Geralt by specifically noting that we can “expect Geralt to be around for a long time” and that he’s not “going anywhere”. It’s not a concrete statement on the character’s return, but it does suggest he’s active during the events of The Witcher 4 and isn’t an impossibility.
Of course, this is also made clearer thanks to recent comments made by Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, who initially suggested he’d be appearing in The Witcher 4 before being told by CD Projekt Red that hadn’t been confirmed. Putting two and two together makes it pretty clear that we’ll probably be seeing Geralt in some capacity in the next game.
