Split Fiction is the name of the next game from Hazelight Studios, the award-winning developer behind A Way Out and It Takes Two. Much like Hazelight‘s past two titles, this newly unveiled one is set to be published by Electronic Arts.

Founded in 2014, Hazelight is a Swedish company that built a reputation as a specialist in accessible co-op experiences catering to both veteran players and non-gamers alike. Its most recently released title, It Takes Two, won the ultimate honor at The Game Awards 2021, supplementing its GOTY award with two other wins in the Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer Game categories.

Award-winning co-op title It Takes Two breaches an important mark in sales, reflecting the game’s continued popularity among gamers.

Hazelight has now returned to the 2024 edition of The Game Awards to unveil its next project, Split Fiction. Just like its first two titles, this one is also designed as an innovative multiplayer experience requiring clever cooperation between two players to progress. But rather than settling on just one setting, Split Fiction will feature a multitude thereof, allowing players to jump between fantasy and sci-fi worlds alike. Its gameplay also promises to offer a lot of variety, with missions ranging from escaping a supernova to battling a monkey in a dance-off. Players can also look forward to using gravity bikes and hoverboards, fighting an evil kitty, and riding sandsharks, among other activities.

Split Fiction Will Be Hazelight’s First Game With Cross-Platform Multiplayer

Hazelight’s signature Friend’s Pass system is confirmed to be making a return in Split Fiction, allowing two people to play online together with just one copy of the game. This particular feature will even be improved with the addition of cross-platform multiplayer, a first for the Swedish studio. Alternatively, local split-screen multiplayer support will also be part of the package.

Split Fiction’s Protagonists Are Writers

In terms of plot, Split Fiction will put players in the shoes of Mio and Zoe, writers of sci-fi and fantasy novels, respectively. The two will find themselves trapped in the worlds they have created and consequently embark on a quest to “take back their creative legacies” while growing closer together. All of that sounds like an apt premise for reaching the emotional heights and drama achieved by both A Way Out and It Takes Two.

Split Fiction‘s TGA 2024 reveal was accompanied by a release date: March 6, 2025. The game will simultaneously debut on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Its PC port will be available via Steam, EA app, and the Epic Games Store. All versions of Split Fiction will be priced at $49.99.
