Sloclap, the developer behind the masterful melee-focused games Sifu and Absolver, made an appearance at The Game Awards 2024 to reveal Rematch, a third-person online football game.
As is always the case before a big showcase like The Game Awards, there are a ton of rumours and murmurs about what developers could be showing up and what new game they’ll be showing off. While there are plenty of hints about huge “holy s**t” announcements, there are a few studios that decided to get ahead of the curve and confirm their appearance.

If You Miss Sleeping Dogs, Play Acts Of Blood
Acts of Blood is basically The Raid in video game form, and I can’t get enough of its free demo.
One of those studios was none other than Sloclap, who made a name for itself with Absolver and followed up that close-quarters combat excellence with the mighty Sifu. Hours before the show began, Sloclap tweeted and confirmed that it’d be making a surprise (or not so surprising since it was revealed before) appearance at the show.
When confirming its appearance at The Game Awards, Sloclap said to “expect to be surprised”. A lot of fans instantly took that (or at least hoped) that would mean an announcement for a sequel to Sifu or Absolver. As we now know, that wasn’t the case as they’re actually making a third-person football game called Rematch, which launches in 2025.
The trailer showed a football game that is uniquely controlled in third-person, with the player seemingly focusing on one footballer at a time and being able to control them more closely than they would in something like EA Sports FC or PES. It’s a bit of a surprise from Sloclap, but it does look bloody great, so we’re all on board.
Sifu is one of my favourite melee-focused games of all time (yes, even over Sleeping Dogs and Batman: Arkham), so I’m on board with whatever the studio does next. Yes, even if it’s football.
Although Sifu released nearly three years ago now, it’s not been far from the public eye at all. Not only has Sloclap been consistently updating Sifu with free DLC (shout-out to the badass arena mode), but it also just got a gorgeous dedicated Secret Level episode. That sets the stage for it to continue as a full-blown series in my book, but we’ll have to wait for after Rematch by the looks of it.
