- Lanterns series to star John Stewart and Hal Jordan in an Earth-based detective story.
- Despite the infamous Green Lantern film, fans hope for a successful live-action adaptation of the iconic characters.
Green Lantern actor Aaron Pierre reportedly plans to watch a past DC movie to prepare for their new role. However, most fans probably wouldn’t recommend this particular DC film, including its main star.
Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern was the first live-action feature film for the iconic DC Comics character. Unfortunately, the film was a disaster that bombed at the box office and was overwhelmingly lambasted by audiences. Even Reynolds continues to joke about Green Lantern, which is still regarded as one of the worst superhero movies over a decade after its release. Fast forward to 2024, and a new live-action Green Lantern adaptation is being produced by DC Studios as part of James Gunn’s DC Universe franchise. Most would avoid Reynolds’ infamous DC movie, but Pierre seemingly has different plans.

Arrowverse Actor Reveals Their Biggest Regret About The Franchise
An Arrowverse actor revealed their biggest regret about the DC franchise now that The CW has ended it with Superman and Lois finale.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the new Green Lantern series’ John Stewart actor Aaron Pierre was asked if he’d seen Reynolds’ DC movie. “I haven’t seen that, no,” Pierre told EW. However, Pierre reportedly told EW that Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie is “most definitely” on his to-watch list for research purposes. Pierre said he is familiar with the John Stewart version of Green Lantern and that the animated Justice League Unlimited series “might have been one of” his first introductions to the character.
Pierre’s John Stwarart will co-lead the DCU’s Lanterns series with Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Plot details haven’t been released, but DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran have described Lanterns as an Earth-based detective story in the vein of HBO’s True Detective. Safran has also stated that the murder mystery investigated by John Stewart and Hal Jordan will lead to the overarching storyline being told across the DCU movies and TV shows. With production on Lanterns expected to begin in January 2025, Pierre praised Gunn, Safran, executive producer, comic book writer Tom King, showrunner and series writer Chris Mundy, and executive producer Damon Lindelof. “We can’t wait to get to work,” Pierre said.
While most fans would advise against watching Reynolds’ Green Lantern, Pierre may be unaware of its reputation. No one is under any delusion that the movie is good, as Gunn noted when he revealed Reynolds’ reaction to a joke offer to return as Green Lantern in the DCU. However, watching the Green Lantern movie could provide insight into what to avoid. Green Lanterns, particularly the Hal Jordan and John Stewart versions, are among the more popular DC characters, and fans want to see a live-action adaptation worthy of their iconic status. So, learning lessons from past mistakes might not be the worst idea.
Lanterns is in pre-production at DC Studios.
