- House of the Dragon season 3 features Rhaenyra’s empowerment journey.
With House of the Dragon season two wrapping up earlier this year, fans are now casting their eyes onto the horizon as season three heads into production. However, it’s not just fans who are looking into the future of the show as Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, also has their sights set on its return, but with one important request for their character. The long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel series arrived in June 2024 and has been renewed for a third and fourth season. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon focuses on the fall of the House Targaryen as the clan ascends into a huge civil war where families are broken apart by greed and betrayal.
Season two of House of the Dragon came to a head with an epic showdown between Team Black and Team Green. Even though the HBO series has been a success in terms of audience viewership, its season two finale left some with a bad taste in their mouths who weren’t too happy with its underwhelming ending, much to their chagrin. With season three promising bigger battles and the introduction of new characters, one of its major stars is demanding one, rather simple but important thing for their character in a bid to appear more battle-ready than ever before.

Emmy D’Arcy Wants A Sword For Rhaenyra In House Of The Dragon Season 3
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Emma D’Arcy talked candidly about how displeased they were that Rhaenyra Targaryen wasn’t given a sword in House of the Dragon season two. The actor, who has since starred in various stage plays, said that they were fed up with the fact that female members of the Targaryen brood weren’t given weapons to carry around like the male members were. D’Arcy called it “ridiculous” and explained that they don’t care if it’s a sword or a dagger, just as long as they had somewhere to put their hands. They went on to say that they have put a request to showrunner Ryan Condal that this is something they must see as a fixture for Rhaenyra going forward into season three.
In another interview recently, D’Arcy also spoke about Rhaenyra’s journey in House of the Dragon‘s season three, saying that the Queen has now finally come into power after two seasons but that they think it will be “quite a different challenge” to embody that kind of confidence. All fingers are crossed for House of the Dragon season three to improve on the elements that fans found most disappointing. George R.R. Martin wasn’t too shy about voicing his opinions on the changes made from the book to the TV series either, so here’s hoping that the loose threads in the Targaryen tapestry can be sewn together in time.
House of the Dragon season three is expected to start filming next year with a possible release date sometime in 2026. In the meantime, however, the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off which will focus on Ser Duncan and Prince Aegon Targaryen, aims to be released sometime in late 2025, so fantasy fans should get their eyes on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms first.
