Helldivers 2's Latest Major Update Goes Live During The Game Awards

The latest major update for Helldivers 2, titled Omens of Tyranny, is live right now, having been announced during The Game Awards. The patch adds the mind-controlling Illuminate civilization to the game: a faction that uses psychic powers to overtake Super Earth citizens and transform them into mindless thralls.

As seen in the trailer that was released during The Game Awards, the update also adds a Jeep-like vehicle to the game and new urban environments, as well. Only time will tell how these new additions affect the flow of the ongoing conflict to defend Super Earth, as this update means the Game Masters that affect the enemy strategies in the background of Helldivers 2 now have more toys to play with as they attempt to outsmart players’ efforts.

This update is coming out on the heels of Arrowhead Game Studios’ 60-day plan to fix Helldivers 2, which had a not-so-great update earlier this year that made a lot of unpopular changes to the game, like nerfing the fan-favorite flamethrower weapon. The game is in a better spot now, and presumably this update will see a surge of players picking up the improved experience this weekend.

Helldivers 2 was picked for GameSpot’s Best Games of 2024. The game has had its ups and downs during 2024, but regularly excels as a superb hangout game that delivers hours of slapstick hilarity and rewardingly explosive gameplay, especially if you have three friends to squad up and drop with. And that orchestral score? Incredible.

Helldivers 2 is available for PS5 and PC.
