But, while the game faced its share of frustrations, it still walked away with two awards from The Game Awards— Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game.
It was a good night for Arrowhead and the Helldivers 2 team, but also a great night for fans, as the studio revealed the game’s latest update, Omens of Tyranny, was shadow-dropping during the event and would see the return of the Illuminate.
The announcement of the Illuminate returning was so exciting for the Helldivers 2 community, that players flooded back in their thousands, giving the game its highest peak concurrent player count since April.
Helldivers 2 Is Back Baybeeee
Last night, following the announcement and release of the Omens of Tyranny update, 131,752 players jumped into Helldivers 2 on Steam, the highest it’s been since late April this year. According to SteamCharts, the highest it’d been in the last six months before last night was just over 68,000, so last night’s player count is significant.
This number is only likely to rise as the weekend approaches and as more and more people find out about the new content.

Alongside the increased player count, Helldivers 2 also faced a flurry of positive reviews on Steam. SteamDB reports that, as of the time of writing, the game has received over 400 positive reviews today alone, and early December aside, this is one of the highest single-day review counts in some time.
Helldivers 2’s Omens of Tyranny update sees players do battle on the streets of Super Earth for the first time since the game was released, and it will also launch with a fittingly named new Warbond, Urban Legends. This Warbond features a new melee weapon, the SQC-19 Stun Lance, the A/FLAM-40 Flame Sentry, and more armor options.
