My Hero Academia recently ended, after over 10 years of serialization. While it is nice to see such a long-lasting and popular franchise finally closing the characters’ journeys, a lot of fans have not been satisfied, especially with how things turned out to Deku.
After the series ending serialization a few months ago, the final My Hero Academia volume (#42) was finally out last week. It included a brand-new epilogue that added a lot to the original finale. Still, not everyone was happy with the new information, and fans even started mass blocking the author on social media.
Well, like it or not, the series did trend in the last few months. Less than 10 days after launching, the final volume has already surpassed 1 million copies in circulation. It will be reprinted and available in stores starting December 25, 2024.
It is important to notice that copies circulating are the ones sent to shops and stores, and not necessarily the ones sold directly to costumers (except when it comes to digital editions). But the fact that the manga already needed a reprint means sales numbers are probably high.
The “Controversial” Finale of My Hero Academia
When the last chapter came out, a lot of fans were disappointed with what they read. The biggest issue was Deku not ending the series as the number one hero, but as a teacher of the next generation of heroes. Not everyone was mad at it, though, and many people pointed out that this ending actually fits Deku more than becoming the world’s number 1.
When it was revealed that the 42nd volume would have a new epilogue, a lot of fans started expecting these new pages would “remedy” the finale, but it didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to, and fans who were already angry at the original ending got even more frustrated by the final volume.
What’s Next For Creator Kohei Horikoshi
Horikoshi took a few breaks right before finishing the series a few months ago. Considering this and the fact that he spent years writing the series, a lot of people were expecting he would take a break from manga for a while. But that’s not what’s happening, as he has already confirmed to be working on a new series (and after so many over-emotional reactions, he might be looking for how the anime adaptation will deal with the series finale).
My Hero Academia manga is published in the US by VIZ Media and the final chapter can be read for free on the Manga Plus app and website.
