Kyora has been announced for an Early Access release on Steam, with a reveal trailer shown at The Game Awards 2024. Although Pugstorm has been largely focused on Core Keeper, with updates planned for 2025, it appears that the Sweden-based studio has proven capable of tackling another project in the meantime. Kyora sets out to expand on many of the ideas that made its developer’s last release so popular.

Pugstorm is a developer that’s become particularly well known for Core Keeper, a game with dynamically-lit 2D pixel visuals, focused on survival and crafting in an open world. Although Core Keeper has been out in Early Access on Steam since 2022, the game received a full release this year. Some players consider Core Keeper to be one of the best co-op games of 2024, comparable to titles like Stardew Valley and Terraria. Pugstorm appears to be moving further in Terraria‘s direction with Kyora.

Pugstorm Reveals New Co-Op Game Kyora

Kyora appears to take heavy inspiration from popular titles like Terraria and Noita, offering a malleable environment that will allow pixel-by-pixel terraforming in a procedurally-generated open world. Gamers will be able to craft a variety of items, ranging from more basic structures like bridges and bases, as well as objects steeped in fantasy, including wands that facilitate the manipulation of matter. With items like these, players will be able to more easily fight bosses known as the Heralds and upgrade their toolkits, finding more to do.

Players are encouraged to explore as much as possible with friends to combine skills and discover item synergies, making it easier to survive the increasingly hostile world of Kyora, which seems to incentivize riskier gameplay with greater rewards. As people find more in the world, they’ll face greater threats, and the various biomes available will offer new solutions to the obstacles that gamers are bound to encounter. Although there is no set release date for Kyora, Pugstorm and Chucklefish note that the title will drop in “the near future.”
