2024 is becoming a remarkable year for Balatro, as it takes home the Best Mobile Game award at The Game Awards 2024, beating fan favourites like Wuthering Waves and Zenless Zone Zero. Recently launched on September 26th, 2024, this deck-building roguelike title is winning awards after awards, defeating strong nominees.
Balatro is having a perfect year-run, claiming a lot of accolades along the way
Balatro is a roguelike deckbuilding title featuring a magical mix of card games like Solitaire and Poker, that does not follow the mainstream game rules. It has received a lot of positive reviews since its launch on September 26th, 2024 on Android, iOS and Apple Arcade.
So it’s no surprise that Balatro is winning so many awards. The game won the Best Mobile Game award at TGA 2024, beating contenders like AFK Journey, which won the iPhone Game of the Year award and Best Game in the US at Google Play Best of 2024, fan favorites like Wuthering Waves and Zenless Zone Zero, as well as Pokémon TCG Pocket, which recently made $200 million in revenue in its first month.
Balatro is taking indie games to the next level
Speaking of winning multiple awards, Balatro has also claimed the Best Debut Indie Game, winning over strong nominees like Animal Well, Manor Lords, Pacific Drive, and The Plucky Squire. Additionally, it won the Best Independent Game, beating titles such as UFO 50, NEVA, Animal Well, and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes at this year’s The Game Awards in Los Angeles, USA where the event celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Apart from the TGA awards, the game also grabbed the Indie Mobile Game Of The Year award at the GamingonPhone Awards 2024, held on December 6, 2024, beating seven other nominees to earn this award, including Slash Quest, Guncho, BROK the InvestiGator, Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance, Boxes: Lost Fragments, Auto Priates: Captains Cup, and Halls of Torment: Premium. Moreover, Balatro+, the Apple Arcade version won the Apple Arcade Game of the Year at App Store Awards 2024.
Overall, I can say that Balatro really deserves all the awards and praises it is receiving. The game has already set records, selling more than a million copies within days of its launch on PC, Nintendo Switch, and consoles. In my opinion, regardless of who is winning, it really makes me happy to see mobile gaming collectively improving, bringing in innovative and fresh games along the way.
