LocalThunk, the solo developer behind the award-winning poker roguelike card game Balatro, joked about needing a sturdier shelf after multiple wins at The Game Awards 2024. The ceremony took place on December 12 and celebrated the wealth of incredible games that have been released over the past year, Balatro included. The 10th-anniversary edition of the show was also home to a number of massive game reveals, such as CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4, an unexpected 2025 release window for Xbox’s The Outer Worlds 2, and a cinematic trailer for Naughty Dog’s new 80s sci-fi-inspired IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Balatro took the gaming world by storm when it was released in early 2024. The game’s addictive nature, paired with its mobile release and continual updates and crossovers with other popular games such as The Witcher 3, Among Us, Vampire Survivors, and most recently showing up in a Cyberpunk 2077 side quest, kept Balatro alive in the zeitgeist all year long. Because of this, Balatro became an unlikely frontrunner for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, alongside games like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, and Black Myth: Wukong.
