28 Years Later Crew Member Potentially Debunks Cillian Murphy’s Zombie Return

Summary

  • Cillian Murphy might not play a zombie in 28 Years Later, according to a crew member on set.
  • Fans speculated Murphy was a zombie in the trailer, but it could be Angus Neill.
  • 28 Years Later depicts survivors facing mutated horrors, with a star-studded cast.

The sinister trailer for 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle’s much-anticipated movie, has sparked a slew of rumors regarding whether Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original 28 Days Later, has returned to the horror franchise as a zombie. However, it seems as though those hoping it is Murphy making his way back as a brain-dead creature might have their expectations now quashed, according to a crew member on the movie’s set. Murphy starred in 2002’s original alongside Brendan Gleeson and Naomie Harris, in what was a hugely triumphant role for the Oscar-winning Irishman. His success followed him years later in his role as physicist J Robert Oppenheimer in the movie Oppenheimer, where he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

The first trailer for 28 Years Later saw a nail-biting series of creepy snippets from the movie that included savage zombies running down a hill, a mountain of skulls that looked like some kind of brutal ritual, and, of course, that scene where a zombie pops up out of a field behind Jodie Comer. Many fans of the franchise believe that the zombie is, in fact, Murphy and this is his “surprise” cameo in the movie, but that might not be the case at all and viewers might have to wait to see who Murphy will actually star as.

Cillian Murphy Might Not Be A Zombie In 28 Years Later

According to a crew member, who claims to have worked on the set of 28 Years Later, Cillian Murphy isn’t the zombie that can be seen in the trailer. Going by the name of PJ on Twitter, the social media user said that they had worked on the film in Northumberland as a freelancer and witnessed the studio filming the zombie scene, so they can vouch that it wasn’t actually Murphy. They also said that the person in the field was a local runner, who the studio hired as a zombie. Of course, as always, people should take opinions found on the internet with a pinch of salt until they are confirmed, but it does seem to fit in with a report by NME and The Guardian that says the “zombie person” is a model and art dealer, who goes by the name of Angus Neill and was talent-spotted by Boyle, who was struck by his distinctive looks.

The third film in its zombie trilogy, 28 Years Later tells the story of the rage virus that escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and even though quarantine is in full force, some people have managed to survive among the deathly infected. However, when one group of survivors leaves the remote island on a mission to the mainland, they come across horrors and wonders that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well. Just before 28 Years Later‘s trailer was released, its first movie poster offered a sinister tease of what would be waiting in the movie when it does release, especially that gigantic mountains of skulls.

With a budget of $75 million, 28 Years Later is the biggest film to be created on an iPhone and will star Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. 28 Years Later will be released on June 20, 2025.
