PlayStation’s PS5 Disc Drive Is Back In Stock At GameStop

PlayStation's PS5 Disc Drive Is Back In Stock At GameStop

Summary

  • GameStop has restocked the PS5’s detachable disc drive.
  • The accessory has been out of stock everywhere for a while.
  • You need to be a Pro member to buy the disc drive from GameStop.

PlayStation launched a detachable disc drive in 2023 compatible with the slim model of its digital PS5. There wasn’t much interest in the accessory until a year later when PlayStation confirmed its even newer PS5 Pro will be digital-only. The disc drive sold out everywhere soon after that but has since reappeared at GameStop.

The disc drive is currently in stock at GameStop, but there’s a catch. While the price hasn’t been hiked to take advantage of those who have been waiting for the disc drive to return for the past two months, you need to be a GameStop Pro member if you want to buy one. That’s GameStop’s membership rewards program, and unfortunately, it’s a service you have to pay for.

The PS5 Can Now Use The PS1 Start-Up Screen, But Only For A Limited Time

PlayStation just rolled out a 30th anniversary PS5 update, and it’s a pretty special one.

Before you roll your eyes, click away, and wait for the PS5’s disc drive to hopefully be restocked elsewhere, there’s a chance a GameStop Pro sub will be worth your while beyond providing a chance to buy the accessory right now. Signing up gets you a $5 reward, so you’re technically getting the disc drive for $75 instead of $80. You’ll also get $5 per month so if you stay signed up long enough, you’ll earn back a lot more than the $25 it costs to be a Pro member, the only caveat being your monthly rewards can only be spent at GameStop.

But Only For Pro Members

GameStop Pro includes a handful of other perks including access to exclusive deals and products which is where the PS5 disc drive comes in. While frustrating that you need a subscription just to buy one, it is one way to stave off scalpers. Other than simply being popular ahead of the PS5 Pro’s release, the biggest driver behind the disc drive selling out, and staying sold out, has been scalpers buying them all and reselling them for an inflated price.

Even before the disc drive had sold out, scalpers already made their intentions clear as the accessory began to appear on resale sites for a higher price. Clearly scalpers need to make the money they’ve poured into trying to take advantage of potential PlayStation customers somehow this holiday season as some of them have been forced to sell their PS5 Pros for a loss due to a lack of interest in the mid-gen refresh of PlayStation’s newest console.

Disc Drive For PS5 Digital Edition (Slim)

PlayStation’s detachable disc drive has been created with the slimmer model of the digital PS5 in mind. Compatible with just the digital version of the slimmer console, the disc drive can play all PS5 games, most PS4 games, and other Blu-rays.

Between the launch of the Pro and PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, it has been a heck of a few months for new and in-demand PlayStation hardware. Everything in its 30th anniversary collection has sold out multiple times over, and for now at least, it’s unclear if any of it will be restocked again.
