Xbox Gamers Report Issue With Games Disappearing From Their Libraries

Key Takeaways

  • Several Xbox titles have seemingly disappeared from some player’s libraries without warning.
  • Players report that at least five indie games have been mysteriously removed.
  • Some of the games have returned after the developers were alerted to the issue.

Some gamers have recently reported that at least five Xbox titles have gone missing from their libraries without warning. While games are often delisted from certain platforms, it’s unusual to see already-purchased games vanishing from libraries, so this bizarre occurrence may indicate some pretty bad news for Xbox fans.

Gamers have been able to purchase digital titles on Xbox systems since the release of the Xbox Games Store, formerly known as the Xbox Live Marketplace, in 2005. While the Xbox 360 digital store was shut down earlier this year, Xbox has offered its games for current consoles via the Microsoft Store since 2017.

Now, some gamers have noticed that at least five indie games or DLC have vanished from their libraries: Bard’s Gold (Xbox One version), Black and White Bushido, Knight and Mourning, River City Girls 2: Double Dragon (DLC), and Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. According to a social media post made by UpstairsNo9249, Microsoft seems to be doing compliance checks on some games, and this led the company to hide some titles from the store. However, hiding games from the store actually removes them from the owner’s libraries, as their device will check with the store and will not find any indication that the title was purchased if the page is hidden. This discovery was confirmed by multiple gamers in the comments, who were also unable to find these games. Fortunately, it seems that the devs were alerted, and all of these games, except for Black and White Bushido, are playable once again.

Games Reported Missing From Player’s Libraries

  • Bard’s Gold (Xbox One version)
  • Black and White Bushido
  • Knight and Mourning
  • River City Girls 2: Double Dragon (DLC)
  • Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

While Xbox games being delisted is not something unheard of, this generally does not stop these titles from being accessed by people who purchased them, which indicates that this issue was likely caused by an error made by Microsoft. Apart from these recently vanished projects, UpstairsNo9249 also cited a few games that disappeared a while ago and do not have pages anymore, including Project Downfall, Polychromatic, Oniria Crimes, One Step After Fall (German), and One Step After Fall (Spanish).

Hopefully, what remains of the issue will be solved soon. Many gamers who own an Xbox use subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass to access games, but consoles such as the Xbox Series S do not support physical media. All gamers who own these consoles can do to acquire games is purchase them digitally, and problems such as this one can greatly impact the confidence that the community has in Microsoft’s digital storefront.
