League of Legends has had its fair share of spin-offs and other sorts of tie-in projects, with Arcane wrapping its final season only a few short weeks ago. League of Legends developer Riot Games has officially announced that the game’s next spin-off is already on the way. The unreleased game is currently named Project K, with a potential release date as early as next year.




Project K has been advertised as a League of Legends card game, and seems sure to gain plenty of traction on those grounds. League of Legends players tend to enjoy spin-offs, while plenty of players in the TCG community at large are always looking for the next big thing. While not much has been revealed about Project K since the initial announcement, there are still a few definitive things that fans can expect to see clarified in the following months.

Although Project K is still firmly in the realm of speculation, it does have the benefit of an established developer. Developers as big as Riot allow for a stronger expectation of consistency, as any speculation can be based off of its previous track record. In that regard, there’s always going to be good news and bad news. Thankfully, the bad news for Project K is hardly the end of the world.


First and foremost, there’s reason enough to feel a bit of skepticism about the current release date. The League of Legends fighting game 2XKO is also scheduled for a 2025 release date, after first being announced in 2019 under the name Project L. Delays certainly aren’t out of the picture for Project K, although it’s possible that Riot has learned its lesson from Project L, and has simply waited until Project K was much further into development before making an official announcement.

Of course, this isn’t the only change players can expect from Project K. In fact, one of the few things that can be predicted with near-certainty is an official name change. Just as Project L became 2XKO, Project K will almost certainly be given another name. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to suggest what that title might be until it is officially announced by Riot itself.


For Better or Worse, Project K Could Change League of Legends Lore Forever

Despite having hardly any focus on story within its gameplay, League of Legends lore is about as dense as it gets. With well over 150 playable Champions in League of Legends, there are countless storylines for players to follow. More importantly, this lore has been known to change over time. Although it may sound unrealistic given the scope of the project, fans should seriously watch out for how Project K may affect the lore of League of Legends.

Some fans may think that an outside source like Project K shouldn’t have a heavy impact on official lore, but Arcane has recently proven otherwise. Arcane is currently considered the primary canon for League of Legends, with everything before it serving as a placeholder. Project K may not be on the same scale as Arcane, but Riot will likely bring it in line with everything that was introduced or changed by the TV series, and could potentially even give room for Project K to introduce official lore under the new umbrella.

As veteran fans may already know, League of Legends already has a trading card game in the form of Legends of Runeterra. Riot has assured that Project K is a wholly separate project, but that doesn’t mean one can’t expect a few similarities. Fans of Legends of Runeterra should be sure not to hold their breath, however, as it still isn’t fully clear what shape these changes may take.

One notable detail is the focus of Project K, and the way the game will be played. Developers have suggested they hope to create a thriving competitive scene for Project K, which may ease worries that the game will be more simplistic than Legends of Runeterra. Project K will be released physically, which seems to support this theory, and is already a huge leap from Legends of Runeterra.

Project K’s First Trailer Contained a Few Major Reveals

Although Riot does have yet to reveal some vital information about Project K, the game’s first trailer was relatively extensive compared to a typical reveal. For example, the trailer revealed a number of cards for the game, including Champions like Jinx and Viktor. Of course, Champions as popular as these would’ve always been a safe bet, so it’s hardly the biggest reveal.


Thankfully, the developers didn’t stop there. Many of the cards shown also gave a clear look at their effects. While some didn’t divulge much of the game’s rules, others offer hints about potential card interactions. Yasuo has the ability to move friendly cards, which suggests a dynamic field involving the location cards revealed earlier in the ability.

Throughout the four-minute reveal, developers made brief reference to a number of features and mechanics. One such remark teased the existence of alliances, which is sure to excite fans that are looking to play with friends. Best of all, the game’s imminent release date means even more information about Project K is bound to be revealed any day now.
