Avengers: Doomsday
.
As the production for Avengers: Doomsday moves ever closer to starting production, MCU fans are starting to learn more and more about what they can expect in the upcoming film. Of course, long before Avengers: Doomsday got anywhere close to shooting, the biggest surprise of all was revealed in who would play the main antagonist. Needless to say, there were more than a few people who were truly shocked by Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom.
Earlier this week, people were even more surprised by the rumors that Chris Evans is returning to the MCU specifically for Doomsday. However, unlike Marvel parading Downey Jr out on stage and immediately announcing who he is portraying immediately, Marvel isn’t confirming the Chris Evans

reports. The company is certainly not rolling him out on stage in costume to show who he is and how he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s left people guessing in what capacity his appearance. But what if the answer to this riddle is a simple one? What if it’s not a riddle at all? This one doesn’t need to be a misdirect. Marvel has already made it very clear how someone who has died or retired or both can return.

The Simplest Answer In The MCU is The Most Obvious
Chris Evans played, of course, Captain America for many, many years. He was The First Avenger and kickstarted the whole coming together of the larger group. It’s not an overstatement that next to maybe Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, Steve Rogers is the most popular character in the entire Avengers franchise.
It’s not an overstatement that next to maybe Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, Steve Rogers is the most popular character in the entire Avengers franchise.
As annoying as the multiverse may be and as much as it feels like the MCU has abused the theory of the multiverse in order to allow for cameos and story twists and everything in between, the one thing it’s done more than anything else is bring dead characters back to life. This particular MCU theory’s second most popular use is offering up different versions of the same character. And the best thing about it regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that there are infinite worlds that can offer up just the right kind of version of a character to suit their needs. So what if the most straightforward answer to the question of who Chris Evans is playing is the simplest? He’s playing Captain America. Steve Rogers is coming back to the MCU. It’s just not the one fans are used to seeing on the big screen.
No Chris Evans Misdirect This Time
One of the other obvious choices for who Chris Evans might be playing is Johnny Storm yet again. After all, Doctor Doom is getting introduced into the Avengers universe in Fantastic Four: First Steps. Because that movie is set in an alternate universe, the multiverse is going to come into play in a big way. It stands to reason Johnny Storm could pop up again.
Granted, that would seem incredibly ham-handed after he was comic relief in Deadpool & Wolverine. The joke where they show Evans with the audience (and Wade Wilson) expecting him to yell “Avengers assemble” and he yells “flame on” instead has been done. But that doesn’t mean that they won’t go back to that well. However, it seems far more unlikely because it would be expected at this point.
No, the more obvious and smartest direction to go this time would simply be to have Chris Evans playing Captain America one more time. They could even go with a different version of Captain America. Perhaps he could even show up in the black outfit Steve Rogers wore in the comics when the government stripped him of the mantle for a short period of time. It would be an interesting way to bring in the hero to fight Doctor Doom. And of course, being The First Avenger, what better way than to bring him back as a member of the Avengers. For one movie at least.
Can The MCU Stand To Have Two Beloved Villains?
Just because Chris Evans might be Captain America it doesn’t mean that he has to be a good version of Steve Rogers. There are already some theories out there that Doctor Doom will be Tony Stark rather than Victor Von Doom. The idea is that this will have an emotional punch when he shows himself to the Avengers and it turns out he’s their enemy.
There is also plenty of talk that Doctor Doom could be accompanied by the “sacred timeline’s” Wanda Maximoff back from the dead. It wouldn’t seem like that big a stretch if the filmmakers wanted to really deliver a knock out blow to the heroes if there was more than one familiar face fighting on the wrong side. While having Chris Evans playing a bad Steve Rogers would have Avengers: Doomsday walking a tightrope, Captain America being back is the simplest and possibly most correct answer to who the actor is playing.
