Key Takeaways
- Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was reportedly announced before active development had begun, explaining the lack of updates since its 2021 reveal.
- Revealing games too early can damage gamers’ perceptions and a studio’s reputation.
- A potential reveal at the 2024 Game Awards could help WB Games set things right for the Wonder Woman game.
An industry insider has provided some insight into what happened with Monolith Production’s Wonder Woman game. First revealed all the way back at the 2021 Game Awards three years ago, Monolith’s Wonder Woman game received a short cinematic teaser trailer showing various close-up shots of Diana Prince’s iconic armor. Fans of the hero and gaming fans in general have been left wondering about the game ever since, as there’s been nothing but radio silence about the title from Monolith and WB Games.
It’s usually standard practice for AAA game studios to hold off on revealing their games until they’re at a certain point in development, usually about a year to 18 months before the game is due to release. Of course, there are certainly outliers. Bethesda, for example, famously revealed Fallout 4 just five months before its launch later that year in 2015. Its most recent RPG, Starfield, was announced five whole years before it saw the light of day last year. Furthermore, next summer will mark a whopping seven years since Bethesda’s official reveal trailer of The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018.

Monolith’s Wonder Woman Must Be Mindful of Who It Cameos, If Anyone
Monolith’s Wonder Woman is still entirely under wraps and when more is shared it will hopefully tread carefully regarding its DC mythology.
Three years after Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was announced, industry insider Jason Schreier revealed the reasoning behind the game’s deafening radio silence on the most recent episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily. Schreier mentioned that at the time of the reveal Monolith Productions didn’t have any part of the game actively being worked on yet and that it was apparently “nothing.” He went on to add that Quantic Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse, which had its cinematic reveal trailer at that very same show, was in the same boat; neither of the studios had begun work on these games when they announced them.
Monolith’s Wonder Woman Game Was “Literally Nothing” When It Was First Revealed
Schreier elaborated, saying that studios sometimes do this to attract developers to come work on the game. While this may seem like a sound strategy internally, studios who go this route run the very real risk of damaging gamers’ perception of the project and of the studio at large. There’s currently no knowing for sure whether Monolith’s development of its Wonder Woman game is going smoothly or if it’s hitting roadblocks, but three years without any updates at all would likely have gamers pointing toward the latter possibility. With how poorly WB Games’ other recent titles like 2022’s Gotham Knights or this year’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League have been received, WB already has a hill to climb with Wonder Woman, and three years of no updates won’t help.
With the 2024 Game Awards going live on Twitch, YouTube, and Twitter tomorrow, there’s the possibility that Monolith could show face again with another look at its Wonder Woman game; there have been a number of rumors swirling about big, unexpected reveals and announcements for tomorrow’s show. WB Games has had a rocky 2024 with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League‘s less than favorable reception, to the point of having to announce the end of its live service support after Season 4. Perhaps a new trailer for its single-player Wonder Woman game at The Game Awards could set things right for the publisher moving forward.
