With the announcement that Max Irons has been cast as Sherlock Holmes’ older brother Mycroft Young Sherlock, it’s worth asking who is Mycroft?
During an interview with SFX Magazine, Moffat said, “I’d love to do it again. Look, it’s not a format that wears out. It’s over a hundred years old and going strong, so why aren’t we making more? Sue only said that because she was asked and suddenly it becomes an announcement about a film! There is no new news here. We’re just fending off that question, as ever. We would happily do it again and I hope someday that we do. It seems perverse not to,” he said. “You make enough shows in your lifetime that no one gives a flying one about, so it’s nice to have one that people are passionate about. Sherlock was the UK’s most-watched drama series since 2001 upon its release, gaining 12.72 million for the opening episode of the third series, and that proves there is an active audience waiting to be served more content from this world. The series was smart and ahead of its time in many ways due to how Sherlock would work out the puzzles put in front of him, all while still being rather arrogant. The series proved to have enough wit and intelligence to be entertaining, and that is why bringing it back would be a hit.
The Sherlock Holmes franchise has been explored in detail over the years in various ways. However, how this particular project handled the stories proved to be fresh and innovative, hence its success and popularity. However, there are still many Sherlock Holmes stories that could be focused on if the show were to return, plus it’s an easy genre to add more content to in a creative manner, which opens it up for further expansion.
Sherlock being brought back via another television series or a one-off movie would be a popular choice. The former BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning series gripped people due to its detailed storyline and the way clues would be uniquely woven into the narrative in a bid to keep people guessing. Fans would be happy to see Sherlock return, but considering the star power of Freeman and Cumberbatch, doing so might not be as simple as it seems.
