Plucky Squire Update Adding Game-Changing New Feature

Summary

  • The Plucky Squire added a Streamlined Mode in its latest update, offering quicker dialogue and less hand-holding for a swifter gaming experience.
  • Other quality of life improvements include more autosaves, the ability to restart chapters, and dialogue portraits for certain characters.
  • The Plucky Squire is available for 25% off on Steam during the holidays, temporarily reducing the price to $22.

The Plucky Squire has released a new update that adds a new optional mode that does away with some of the game’s hand-holding. Developed by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital, The Plucky Squire was released in September to very positive reviews, and has even been nominated in two categories at this year’s Game Awards: Best Family Game and Best Debut Indie.

One of the more unique indie games to release in 2024, The Plucky Squire tells the tale of a storybook hero named Jot, who figures out a way to jump out of his book and explore the “real world” environment. While in the book, players control Jot from a 2D top-down Zelda-like perspective, but when roaming outside the book, the game becomes a 3D action adventure platformer. The Plucky Squire was praised for its 2D and 3D art styles and its satisfying and intuitive puzzle design that sometimes lets players physically influence the world of the storybook from the 3D world.

Gamers who like The Plucky Squire are certain to also enjoy these adventure and fourth-wall-breaking games.

Just a day before The Plucky Squire‘s big night at The Game Awards, developer All Possible Futures made a Steam post detailing an all-new update, 1.15.1. Headlining the big update is “Streamlined Mode,” which lets players opt for a play style with less hand-holding than the standard experience. This new optional mode does away with the game’s slow camera pans after unlocking doors and cuts down a bit on some of The Plucky Squire‘s dialogue and tutorials, making for a swifter experience for more seasoned gamers who felt like the game’s pacing was too slow.

The Plucky Squire‘s 1.15.1 update also brings other quality of life improvements alongside Streamlined Mode. The game now holds on to more autosaves and gives players the ability to restart their current chapter, making it easier for The Plucky Squire players to get out of a pickle. The update also adds dialogue portraits for some of the game’s more important characters, though it’s unclear if they’ve only been added to Streamlined Mode, or if they’re in Standard Mode as well. Lastly, All Possible Futures revealed that The Plucky Squire will be available for 25% off on Steam throughout the holiday season, temporarily dropping its $30 price tag down to just over $22.

In the Steam post, All Possible Futures expressed its gratitude to The Plucky Squire players and for being nominated at The Game Awards. In both of its categories, The Plucky Squire is going up against popular titles like Astro Bot, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Animal Well, the Game of the Year-nominated Balatro, and others. Fans will have to tune in to The Game Awards tomorrow on Twitch, YouTube, or Twitter to find out whether The Plucky Squire will take home an award.
