Dune: Part 2 Receives Golden Globe Nominations
While awards season has only just begun, Dune: Part Two appears to be off to a slower start, at the Golden Globes at least. The film will be competing in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category and in the Best Original Score – Motion Picture category for Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack. Dune 2 Receives Original Score Nomination Amid Controversy
The nomination for Zimmer’s score comes as something of a surprise given the controversy that has surrounded its eligibility for the Academy Awards. Earlier this week, the Academy officially disqualified Dune: Part Two from Oscar eligibility in the music categories, because the score reportedly exceeds the limits of pre-existing music that are allowed under the Academy’s guidelines. As Dune: Part Two is a sequel, many of its themes are reused from the first film. However, there were hopes that the additional compositions Zimmer provided in the second film would be enough to qualify for awards consideration. The Golden Globes seem to have no such concerns and have recognized Zimmer’s work in its Best Original Score category, which the composer previously won for Dune at the 2022 ceremony.
Dune: Part Two receiving only two nominations may seem concerning, particularly in the lead-up to its Oscars campaign. However, the first movie only received three nominations back in 2021 and still went on to score ten Academy Award nods, so the race is far from over. The race for Best Motion Picture – Drama is a tight one, with the favorites being Conclave and The Brutalist. Dune: Part Two is the only sci-fi film on the ballot, so it will be interesting to see whether the genre film can clutch one of the biggest awards of the ceremony.
The Golden Globe Award winners will be announced on January 5, 2025.
