Pokemon TCG Pocket has swept fans into a card collecting frenzy with the new digital entry in the trading card game, but not all cards seem to be created equal. For players who favor the water type, Pokemon TCG Pocket includes one card that can make or break their deck, a feature which some are hoping will be added for other types as well.




Although Pokemon TCG Pocket set out to provide a collecting-centric experience, the game also features a stripped back version of the TGCs battle system. When creating decks to battle against other players, it’s important to choose the right cards that compliment the Pokemon being included. For players making decks based around the water type, the Misty card, exclusively found in Pikachu packs of the Genetic Apex series, is a must. Misty allows players to flip a coin until they get tails, adding one water energy to one of their Pokemon for every heads they flip. This is a quick way to potentially give a Pokemon more than enough energy to use their strongest attacks. The use of this card is part of the reason that water-type decks are currently at the top of the meta, leading some to hope for a similar card that would boost the energy of other types in the same way.

Each Pokemon Type Deserves its Own Misty Card


To be clear, each type in the game has different advantages and drawbacks. Some types, for example, are more liable to include cards that give different status effects, like dark types having the most Pokemon that can inflict poison damage. It’s possible that the Misty card was intended to balance the water type by giving it a unique advantage of being able to gain energy faster than others. But, its inclusion in powerful Blastoise EX decks and ability to power up other water type Pokemon has made it by far one of the most powerful support cards in the game.

Other support cards exist that give power to specific types and have also become mainstays in decks dealing with grass, fire, or electric types, but none of them offer the same immediate power boost that Misty does. Currency support cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket are based on the Kanto gym leaders and Professor Oak, with most of the gym leaders giving their own type some sort of boost. The major difference is that cards like Brock and Blaine only give a boost to select Pokemon of their respective types, while Misty can be used on any water type. Even Erika, who can heal 50 damage from any grass type, has a finite amount of healing power, unlike Misty’s theoretically infinite energy generation. Hopefully, in the future of Pokemon TCG Pocket, gym leader cards from other regions could provide the same boost to their own types that Misty does to water-type Pokemon.

What does the Future Hold for Pokemon TCG Pocket

As a game that’s still in its infancy, Pokemon TCG Pocket still has plenty of room to grow. The powerful cards of today might pale in comparison to those added in future updates. In addition to giving other types their own energy-generating cards, new support cards could give any kind of boost to any type of Pokemon. Not to mention the hundreds of creatures that haven’t been included yet. At the moment, there are only 14 darkness type cards in the game, leaving the future wide open for powerful Pokemon like Umbreon or Giratina to boost dark types in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s meta.


With the game rapidly expanding, new cards and expansions for Pokemon TCG Pocket may be just around the corner. Thankfully, for those who haven’t completed their collections yet, the Genetic Apex boosters won’t be removed, giving players a good opportunity to find Misty cards for their Water-type decks. But, those who are reliant on certain cards like Misty’s might want to keep an eye on the new expansions, because a new powerful support card might change the meta in favor of a different type, or balance the types better by offering them all the same kind of boost.
