One of the most haunting and captivating games about war has returned with new DLC to celebrate ten years since launch. This War of Mine, the sophomore project from 11 Bit Studios, just received a substantial update, and all proceeds will benefit a selection of charities that help communities harmed by conflict.
In terms of war games, they don’t come much more emotive or difficult than This War of Mine. You manage survivors of an ongoing tirade in a fictional European city, who’ve come together in a barren building. Resources are scarce, health and patience are dwindling, and you need to make hard choices that often seem unfair in the name of keeping people alive.
It lands somewhere between a survival game and an RTS, and it remains a distinctly memorable experience. The Forget Celebrations DLC adds another chapter to the narrative, where journalist Katia is writing a book about the central war, when her efforts are stalled by a missile.
She becomes injured, and you must guide her, like you have so many others, hoping that she makes it to an evacuation point, all the while gathering what’s left of her research. It’s a novel spin on the existing formula, tapping into discussions around journalism and the actual day-of-day of being in an active warzone.
The proceeds from Forget Celebrations will be split between four charities 11 Bit has worked with consistently: War Child, Amnesty International, Liberty Ukraine, and Indie Games Poland. Each provides crucial support in one way or another, and every penny helps in those efforts.
This War of Mine: Forget Celebrations is available now on Steam for $3.19/£2.49, and the base game is currently 80% off as well. Our lists of the best strategy games and best horror games will give you plenty more to think about or have nightmares over.
